Good morning fellow posters,

I am working on a project that requires both a boundary survey, as well as GIS deliverables. I am leaning towards Carlson GIS, based upon what I saw in That CAD Girl's recent webinar.

Our office does have one seat of Civil3D, and if it can do the job efficiently, I might go that route, and save the company that money. However, the Carlson GIS module looks fairly straightforward, and has an external database. How does Civil3D handle this?

This is our first big project with this type of deliverable, which is a drawing file with attributes and an external database.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Jimmy

If you already have C3D it is very easy to export the data to shapefile formats. You could probably do the work in Carlson if you prefer, then insert that drawing into C3D and export it out for GIS use. That's probably the most economical way.

You can convert under the planning and analysis tab in civil 3d.

There is a good 7 minute video on youtube on how to transform coordinates in Civil 3D. Do a search on "civil 3d transform coordinate system".

You don't have to have map to convert to GIS format though....you can export using the "mapexport" command, and it will work in C3D to generate shapefiles. You can also create KML files and define the items you want exported from the toolspace bar under toolbox.

What is the format of the GIS deliverable? If shapefile, then it looks like the suggestion of others would be a great route. If it needs to be a file or personal geodatabse, then you would likely need to obtain a license of Esri's ArcMap. From there you can build the geodatabase and import the shapefiles. Alternatively, you could request the schema of their existing geodatabase, which would give you insight to the feature datasets, feature classes and the attribution and you could potentially load your shapefiles directly into their database.

Not sure if you guys use trimble. There is a new GIS module in TBC. I haven't had a chance to play with it yet.

My point was that if you have C3D you have Map by default (it is bundled into C3D) all of the functionality of Map 3D is available within the Planning and Analysis workspace.

My mistake. I didn't realize it was no longer a separate entity.....

It's all good Dan, you can still purchase/lease a seat of map separately but it comes as part of the C3D package as well.
