I use the SPT4 block for my point symbol. For those of you who don't use Carlson, or don't recall the block name, it is a circle with a node in the center of the circle.
I often use the Move Point Attributes with Leader to bring my point numbers out from a corner or a feature, to make the point numbers, elevation, and description easier to read.
I generally bring all of my points in on a PTS-SURVEY Layer, and all is good. Once I resolve my boundary, and either set my new corner points, or determine which existing points will be my corner points, I generally change those points to a PTS-CORNERS Layer, and I also put my control or traverse points on a PTS-CONTROL Layer.
It seems like I have to select the circle, the leader arrow, the leader line, and the point number to change everything to the desired layer. If I don't have the leader and arrowhead, I still have to select the point number and the circle to change all of the point information to the desired layer.
I don't have the boxes checked for separate layers. My typical layers that come in when I import points is as follows:
PNTDESC
PNTELEV
PNTNO
PTS-CONTROL
PTS-CORNERS
PTS-SURVEY
I know I can use the field to finish for some if this stuff, but I still want to be able to easily change the points to the desired layer without having to select a ton of entities.
As always, any advice you can provide is very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Jimmy
Set up point groups based on your descriptors, you can then select points by group name.

That's why I don't use symbols for my points (SPT4, etc). My points are just one cad entity: a block with a node for snapping to, a circle or triangle or X or whatever, and attributes for Point#, Elev and Desc. Life is good!

CTRL-A will turn your group on or off. With group on, you can select any part of the point (desc, symbol, etc) and it will select everything; with group off, you can select individual parts.
Thanks guys. The grouping worked for my purposes.

I love this bar. Thanks David!
