Hi guys,

I've been using Carlson the past 2 or so months and have found that I can do alot more in a single program like this (Carlson on Civil3D) than using the 4 different programs I used to use in the past. I am learning but since Carlson was developed for the US market alot of the features need to be slightly modified to work. One such thing is the WCS (more a Autocad issue than carlson) but got around that by inverting the directions. Tried using the built in SurvNet to see how a Least Square would compare to my other survey program but I think I need much more hours because the DC file I imported looked nothing like the tutorials.

I have a few questions that I hope someone might be willing to answer.

1. How does the "Project Explorer" work and what is its functions? Have tried to see but not making much sense.
2. using the "Search Published Control" only works in the US? Is there a way to make it read a KML, or KMZ or maybe a CSV file instead to find Trig beacons, Town survey marks and my own database of control?
3. Is there a function to create a database to store all my control points in?
4. How do I set my points style so that my point # text, desc text, elev text is always the same size as a default. It seems to reset to some other value and I then have to "Edit Mutiple Pt Att" and then load a saved .pt file to get the sizes correct and sometimes I have to do it twice to get all the points to resize.
5. What is best way to get points into "Point Groups" when importing from a CSV file? Should I use the "Import ASCII File" and in the "Point group to assign" use that function and create a database of possible point codes and Carlson will then add them to those automatically?
6. Is there a quicker way to add points by clicking on the screen than using the "Screen Pick Point". It is slow or I am missing something. I keep on having to click the button > clicking where I want and then it goes back to the "coordinate file utilities" menu form. Then I have to click "Screen pick point" again. Would like to just click click click click and it adds as i go along> I know I can use the "Create point from entities" but that only for existing features (lines, arcs, polylines etc)
7. I've gotten a FLD file set up fairly well to do F2F but I am thinking my surveying style in the field doesn't match my F2F FLD file well enough so F2F does only maybe 40% of my work to do linework, add manhole LL etc. I have attached my CRD file and FLD file and DWG file and the finished product in PDF. If someone is willing to have a look and maybe guide me in where I am going wrong I would appreciate that very much.
8. So let's say I have a DWG file with normal text. Can I have carlson or autocad concatenate certain text based on the Carlson define coord system? Like I have a note saying "1. Survey based on WGS84 WG29 Coordinate system". Next day I am surveying in WGs84 Wg27. Can I have Carlson or autocad update the text based on the projection settings from carlson?
9. When I add my cadastral boundaries (which I calc in my survey software and brought in as a CSV), I want to annotate the direction (az) and distance. That I can do but as our coord system is south azimuth = 0å¡ and increase 360å¡ clockwise and we work in degrees solely, it means a line that does from a zero point and goes directly N 45å¡ W is at 135å¡ in our system. Hope it makes sense. If i then annotate that line (azimuth_distance) the direction will awlays come out 180å¡. To get it correct I have to go to each annotated piece and "switch bearing/azi quadrant". Is there a way to get it correct in the first go?
10. I am trying to do all my surfacing in carlson, but it's difficult and I've tried watching the CAD Girl videos on Youtube and they have helped a fair bit. 2 things I am struggling with is, that let's say I survey a building corner roughly 2m above the NGL, then that is survey with 0.00m target height and 0.000m prism constant and as CODE = .WC or .WCNR. the dot represents all side shots taken reflectorless so that they are not considered for contours. My previous software would include all points for contours but automatically know that .***** points need to be excluded for whatever reason. So that is why the point groups as above interest me. If I import the data and all the .********* points go into their own groups (need to configure that setting as stated in question 5) can I then by default set up by contour creation to tag them as non-surface. Like a built in setting. Secondly once I have done all my triangles but there is no live view of what the contours are now looking like after swopping a triangle and also if I accidentally delete a triangle on the edges of my area I can't seem to get it back. Had to add a new triangle to another point further from the edge of the area to get it back in. I sometimes survey small areas and would then maybe like to be able to add all my triangles by hand or if a survey is done and 2 weeks later and area across the road gets done also. Is there any way to draw triangles manually?

Ok so these are a lot of questions and I realize some may be silly and some might think i "just need to google or youtube it" and I understand. But I have done that and seem to not be getting the answers I am looking for. In South Africa Calrson is fairly unheard of (atleast as far as I know, as nobody I know has ever used it, so I am on my own down here) and nobody seems to be able to answer my questions. If anybody is willing to answer atleast some of questions I would appreciate it immensely

Thank you

Regards

Dirk

This is a fairly tall order (some original comments trimmed for brevity) but hopefully some of the information below helps:

The Carlson http://files.carlsonsw.com/mirror/manuals/Carlson_2017/source/General/Settings/Project_Explorer/Project_Explorer.htm&apos ;">Project Explorer is intended (primarily) for larger-scale projects that are culminations of one or more drawings that are related to various data files (centerlines, surfaces, points, etc). Essentially, the Project Explorer allows teams of people within an organization to better locate various data files that contribute to an overall project/job-site. If you're just starting out with Carlson and/or Carlson Survey, you probably don't need to worry too much about the Project Explorer.

RSAsurv, post: 397082, member: 10950 wrote: 2. using the "Search Published Control" only works in the US? Is there a way to make it read a KML, or KMZ or maybe a CSV file instead to find Trig beacons, Town survey marks and my own database of control?

The http://files.carlsonsw.com/mirror/manuals/Carlson_2017/source/General/Points/Search_Published_Control/Search_Published_Control.htm&apos ;">Search Published Control routine is designed to fetch survey control points as published by the U.S. National Geodetic Survey (NGS). I'm not aware of other organizations that publish this type of control in the format utilized by NGS but if you have a source for such information, please feel free to convey it to [email protected] so we can investigate adding the service to the routine. Otherwise, you might explore the capabilities of the File -- Import -- http://files.carlsonsw.com/mirror/manuals/Carlson_2017/source/General/File/Import_Google_Earth_File/Import_Google_Earth_File.htm&apos ;">Import Google Earth routine and/or the Points -- http://files.carlsonsw.com/mirror/manuals/Carlson_2017/source/General/Points/Import_TextASCII_File/Import_TextASCII_File.htm&apos ;">Import Text/ASCII File routine.

RSAsurv, post: 397082, member: 10950 wrote: 3. Is there a function to create a database to store all my control points in?

You might look into Points -- http://files.carlsonsw.com/mirror/manuals/Carlson_2017/source/General/Points/CooRDinate_File_Utilities/CooRDinate_File_Utilities.htm&apos ;">Coordinate File Utilities -- http://files.carlsonsw.com/mirror/manuals/Carlson_2017/source/General/Points/CooRDinate_File_Utilities/CooRDinate_File_Utilities.htm#cfucopy&apos ;">Copy/Merge Coordinate File. Alternatively, the Carlson GIS module (and/or functionality found within Carlson Survey) can be used for this type of data.

RSAsurv, post: 397082, member: 10950 wrote: 4. How do I set my points style so that my point # text, desc text, elev text is always the same size as a default.

The text sizes of point attributes are typically sized relative to the Horizontal Plot Scale as defined per drawing under Settings -- http://files.carlsonsw.com/mirror/manuals/Carlson_2017/source/General/Settings/Drawing_Setup/Drawing_Setup.htm&apos ;">Drawing Setup and can also be governed by the settings found within the Field-to-Finish FLD file. As needed, points can also be re-sized via the Points -- http://files.carlsonsw.com/mirror/manuals/Carlson_2017/source/General/Points/Resize_Point_Attributes/Resize_Point_Attributes.htm&apos ;">Resize Point Attributes command.

RSAsurv, post: 397082, member: 10950 wrote: 5. What is best way to get points into "Point Groups" when importing from a CSV file?

IMHO, an efficient way to get points into Point Groups is to process them via the codes in the http://files.carlsonsw.com/mirror/manuals/Carlson_2017/source/Survey/Survey/Field_to_Finish/Field_to_Finish.htm&apos ;">Field-to-Finish FLD settings. Otherwise, the Points -- http://files.carlsonsw.com/mirror/manuals/Carlson_2017/source/General/Points/Point_Group_Manager/Point_Group_Manager.html&apos ;">Point Group Manager command allows you to create and manipulate Point Groups based on your particular needs.

RSAsurv, post: 397082, member: 10950 wrote: 6. Is there a quicker way to add points by clicking on the screen than using the "Screen Pick Point".

Check the Points -- http://files.carlsonsw.com/mirror/manuals/Carlson_2017/source/General/Points/DrawLocate_Points/DrawLocate_Points.htm&apos ;">Draw-Locate Points command for it's "Screen Pick" option.

I will try to look things over and post back any suggestions as my time allows.

I'm not aware of an automated way to do this but will pass the information on to programming to see if something like this can be added to the product.

Individual codes within your Field-to-Finish FLD can be tagged as "Non-Surface" codes and data placed with such codes are ignored by default during the triangulation process. Additionally, they can be tagged later via the Surface -- Triangulation Setup Utilities -- Non-Surface Points/Entities -- http://files.carlsonsw.com/mirror/manuals/Carlson_2017/source/Site_Road_Design/3D_Data/Tag_Non-Surface_Points/Tag_Non-surface_points.html&apos ;">Tag Non-Surface Points.

RSAsurv, post: 397082, member: 10950 wrote: Secondly once I have done all my triangles

I'm not (personally) a fan of TIN editing as TIN editing is treating a symptom (e.g. usually lack of breaklines or incorrect point elevations) rather than treating the underlying cause. Rather than editing the TIN (which usually requires edits to be re-done if the TIN were to be re-made), my suggestion would be to correct the source data and/or add (or correct) breaklines within the data. As such, you wouldn't necessarily draw "triangles" manually... rather, you'd add data and then triangulate the data.

I hope this information helps.

Hi guys,

hoping that someone out there could help me with some more Carlson questions.

I import my points into my CRD file using Points ribbon > Import Text/ASCII file. All is well.
My Setup ribbon > Drawing Setup is :
Metric
Hor Scale :1000
Symb Plot Scale : 0.01
Text Plot Scale : 0.01

Problem 1 is that my setting of 0.01 don't stay. Some settings when changed I get a message "Save for current/future". I always pick current and future but this setting seems to change back to 0.05.

Problem/Irritation 2 I have is when I draw my points from Points ribbon > Draw-Locate points > Draw All
The points draw perfectly based on symbol size etc but the text type used for the Tag, code and Elev seems to be Standard. It just looks like 1974 and would prefer to use RomanS or Arial or anything else. Is this a AutoCad issue or a setting within Carlson?

Sorry for my ignorance and thanks in advance

Dirk

Hi again,

Ok I think I might have figured it out

Problem 1 :
Should have gone Setup ribbon > Carlson Configure > Drawing Setup and change symbol and Text Size there and Save when exiting for Future and Current.

Problem 2 :
I'm not sure if I've solved it but this link seems to be the answer
http://www.carlsonsw.com/support/knowledge-base/?action=display_topic&topic_id=779

Thanks and maybe someone else is just as silly as me

Dirk

I either missed your questions the first time around or just skipped the topic because I don't use Carlson. I can offer half a solution to #8, but it is Civil 3D based, not Carlson based. You mentioned using Carlson on C3D so I'm assuming that's still your setup.

If you set your drawing settings within C3D to the desired coordinate system, you can use that as a field within your text. Within your text entity, right click and select Insert Field. Make sure your Field category (upper left) is set to All. Within the Field names: box, scroll down to SystemVariable. The box in the middle will now be populated with system variables. Scroll down and select cgeocs. If desired, you can modify the format to give you lower case. Select OK and you will now have a field that will automatically update to whatever that variable is set to.

I haven't found anything that can be tied to the Datum, but you could just set up a custom property within your drawing properties. Go to the big A at the upper left corner of Autocad, and near the bottom is Drawing Utilities. At the top is Drawing Properties. The last tab on the right should be Custom. Select Add from the right side, and give it a name and a default value (not required but if you have a predominant one it will keep you from having to input it each time). By the way, this should be done in your template file so that it will carry over to all new drawings. You can access this custom property as a field by setting the Field Category to Document and within the Field names: your newly named property will be there for selection. I will dig around to see if there's some way of pulling the datum automatically.

Fields are a powerful and very underused tool. I use them for things like drawing identifiers with date stamps, to fill in title blocks, to number sheets (used in conjunction with Sheet Set Manager), to reference and hyperlink other sheets (again with SSM), and many other things. to By the way, Carlson does have fields also, but unless they have updated it within the last couple of years, they only have a very short list of fields available.

Thanks Bob

I'll give that a try. I use the C3D fields function in my paperspace template. Its a very complex block that changes papersize from A4 to A0 in landscape and portait view.

Scale, date, drawing name, paper size and orientation is all auto generstrdusing the field. Ill have to add the coord system into my template

When I get a chance tomorrow I will upload my template. Maybe someone can hluse it or tell me what I can improve.

I also found that using carlson layer library is awesome.

I imported by layers and styles from an existing dwg and then when I do a draeing just 'force' the correct layer colors, ltypes etc onto all the elements in my drawing. That if F2F has messed up my layers because I havent set them to my my standards yet

My next question, ehich will also probably be answered using fields,is how can I label a line (fence, building, kerb erc) based on the layer name. I know I can do it by using fields but then I have to add text and thenadd a field and then define it. What I want is a command thst adds texts, which is auto genersted based on the layer in which the line is, and all I have to do is place it. Rotation is done automaticaly. Carlson does have a function but havent seen that imI can basically just click and place. I dont want to have to enter the text each time

Btw please try out my manhole invert drawing tool and let me know what you think.

Thanks

Dirk
