Trying to teach myself how to create contours & have failed miserably. I have an LDD background and have been trying to find corresponding steps in Carlson. Any help is greatly appreciated.

what kind of data are you working with? i assume a point file with x,y,z data? did you shoot break lines?
the carlson help files are great
if all else fails call carlson and they will walk you through it. once you get the hang of it you will love it.
There's a down and dirty movie on the Carlson site under Downloads that may help you. It's very similar to LDD. Use "Shrink Wrap" to set the limits of your contours. There's a box selection where yo pick the entities you want to use as breaklines.....similar to proximity faults. Check the boxes and turn it loose. You do not have to have it draw the tin lines, yet they are there for editing. Neat feature.
There's not a whole lot in the books or in the help files if you are looking for the step-by-step stuff. The training movies are a good help, but getting a class from one of the Carlson College outfits is even better.
You are in North Carolina so check Jen DiBona's site, That CAD Girl. She has some reasonably priced classes in you area. Plus she flits about this site from time to time.
Once you get your coordinate file set up, just...(using the pull-down menus)
SURFACE-> TRIANGULATE & CONTOUR
This opens up a tab where you select contour interval, smoothing functions, etc.
When you click OKAY, and it asks you to SELECT OBJECTS three times
the first time,it is looking for INCLUSION POLYLINE, (just hit enter if you have none)
the saecond time, it is looking for an EXCLUSION POLYLINE, just hit enter if you have none)
the third time, it is looking for the points you want to contour.

Also within the document is a LDT Migration Guide (basically an overview on some of the differences between LDT and Carlson).

That cad girl isn't as smart as you would think, I used Carlson to create contours from existing contours, the tin looked fine, when I re-created the contours to see what I would get, they were majorly screwed up, after talking to her on the phone about the problem, she asked me to send the drawing to her so she could see for herself, I did and I haven't heard from her since.
That was almost a year ago.
I would assume there's at least 1/2 a chance that your email didn't make it to me for some reason. There are many times that someone says they're sending something and then they figure it out on their own and I don't hear back on a problem. A simple follow up call would have taken care of it.
It's safe to say that you're the exception, not the rule.
