What are the differences between a standard Bluetooth of today and the old style that are have virtual COM port? Trying to connect an older GPT-3005 with various DC's with no success. The manual mentions a bluetooth virtual port with 38400 baud rate. I keyed in the authorization code, no success yet. I was under the impression that any Bluetooth devices would communicate with each other. Thanks for sharing ideas on this, if you have any.
I don't think there is a difference. A modern bluetooth device should connect back to an older device. While the device is configured as a virtual com port, that really only speaks to how the data is being sent through the bluetooth.
Think of it as a cable, you connect the two devices via a cable physically.. but you must know what format the data is coming out of the cable in order to use it. Sounds like you can't get past the pairing stage though, am I right? Have you tried a blank password, nothing at all?
There are different classes of bluetooth, this for range or distance only.
The problem you are likely seeing is the bluetooth services offered on your device does NOT match the same service on your instrument.
Also note that instrument vendors have changed over the past few years. For example the latest Topcon instruments ES and PS series are actually using sokkia software, so try using Sokkia SRX model in your setup to connect with these instruments.

Thank you for comments, different Bluetooth services appear to be the problem. Solution? Direct cable.
What DC hardware and software versions are you trying to connect the GPT-3005?
I own a GPT-3003 and have connected to various DC's.
Have you tried pairing the device on the DC, outside the survey app?
Lee Green
GPT-3005 with Leica Viva CS-15 w/t Topcon option.
The blutooth icon on the TS doesn't stay on. In/out of viva software same thing. Not too sure.
James, did you ever figure this out? I have a 3003 with similar issues (bluetooth icon on the gun goes on and off)?
