I like this version of Gordon's Song:

Good to remember.

35 Years ago I was in college and a night hacker for Hyannis Taxi. I never heard of the "Fitz" until the song came out...

Surveying somewhere around Eastern Oregon. My days of moving around starting in 59 curtailed a bit.

Thanks,Nate

I thought one of the crew members was a native of the city where I lived at the time. Sure enough. He was on the list. He was 23 at the time and I was 22. The local paper made a BIG deal out of the tragedy.

1975 - WOW. I was working in Santa Ana, California at the Orange County Surveyor's Office with my six-month old Land Surveyors License, probably thinking what a great surveyor I was! 46 years of experience has a way of leveling the playing field.

I was involved in First-Order Triangulation adjustments as well as First-Order Leveling adjustments for the entire County, and then publishing the results. Not your usual land surveying assignments.

Ha ha ha....very funny (but true I am sure). Great pictures.

Thanks for sharing.

edit....as to me, I don't really remember about the Edmund Fitzgerald until I actually heard that song. I guess I wasn't paying much attention back when I was a 21-year-old punk. I do remember watching one of the worst hail storms I have ever seen right around then (if I am not mistaken) up in Fort Collins, CO. There were hail stones the size of a grapefruit.

double-edit....wrong again, that hail storm was from 1979 as I found out through google http://www.wecsa.com/FCClimate/

That was true, I'm already past retirement age but still working. What a foolish thing to do, but it's either that or sitting in the rocking chair watching the boob tube.

Truth in advertising: Both those pictures came from the NGS archives.

My folks were Sault High Class of '74. You from that era? I grew up on the stories of the fitz as my grandparents house is on the St. Marys river and they watched the fitz go by. My mother still has an impressive collection of David Conklin paintings she collected in the years after the wreck.
