I got a call last night that he passed. Stoney taught several Virginia Surveyors through a surveying program at Old Dominion University in the late 80's and 90's. The best course I took from him was Professional Practice. One of the projects was to set up a surveying business from scratch. What licenses you needed, state and federal taxes, LLC or Sole or Corp. Also payroll, business plan, marketing, budgets, insurance, etc. That class made the decision to start my Solo business eight years later an easier decision.

I had not considered a surveying profession until I started college. I figured I would be just an engineer, until I saw where I could get both licenses with his program under the Civil Engineering Technology curriculum. I found I had a talent for surveying and his love of the profession rubbed off on me. I ended get my LS first and still refer to myself as a Land Surveyor and that happens to have an engineering license as well.

:good:
You know you're getting old when your mentors start passing.
He'll be in my thoughts
