I just got word that Dave Hobbs, CA PLS, died last night due to a heart attack. He was my boss and Survey Manager when I worked at Pacific Pipeline Systems, Inc. in Burbank, and later in Long Beach CA. He operated his own company in Burbank and worked for the City of Glendale part time. R.I.P. Dave.
It's true.. So sad, David was one of my best friends
RIP
It's kind of a shocker. Dave seemed to be in the best shape of all of us when I worked with him. Here's a picture of him and I near Gorman CA. Dave is on the right.

Sorry to hear it. How old was he?
I am not sure, but I want to say maybe mid to upper 50's. Too young basically. That picture was taken in 1998.
Too, too young.
I just read this on the CLSA forum. Can't believe it...usually talk with him about every month or so. He could not have that old. I'm sorry to see this.
🙁 So very sorry to hear this. Don't like hearing when any of our guys are sick or pass on, for whatever the reason is. His friends, family, and loved ones have our deepest sympathies and condolences.
Noodles 😇
Unbelievable. He looked healthy as a horse on Thursday night! Here he is presenting Jay Seymour with the CLSA Member of the Year award at Tony P's Dockside Grill in Marina del Rey. RIP, Mr. Hobbs.
His longtime friend and helper Mike has asked me to post that messages may be left on the office phone:(818)558-5610.
When the family decides what to do someone will post it on this board.
He says it will probably be a private affair.
Very sorry to hear this news. Dave was a good man. We served together on a college advisory board. I didn't know him well but our interactions were always friendly. Periodically we would chat on the phone when we had the coincidence of crossing one another's survey paths. He seemed to be in excellent health. I am so shocked by this. We just spoke on the phone only a couple of weeks ago about a mutual client. News like this is always a wake up call about the fragility of human life and the relative shortness of our time here on earth in comparison with eternity.
I am Dave Hobbs right hand man. If anyone has any questions or needs anything else please feel free to call the office. In the meanwhile I'll post some photos as I go through his computer. The only other thing I can say at this time is that life is short, enjoy and make the most of what you have left. Hung your loved ones and let them know you love them every chance you have.
Too Dam Young!
RIP, His family will be in my thoughts and prayers.
Ralph
David Hobbs - Michael
Thanks for posting that picture of David.
I spoke with David on Friday. He had just purchased some small sheet reflector targets and we were discussing different ways he could make portable prisms out of them so he could shoot c/l ties.
Michael.. I just spoke with Bill at the county RS division and if I can be of any help clearing David's RS up please just let me know. I will try giving you a call at the office.
My cell is 818-415-4896
So sad,
I remember David from CLSA meetings I attended in 2002-2005. What a great guy, with a true passion for the profession. RIP
Mike, despite the terrible circumstances, it was good to hear from you. Please send Dave's family my condolences.
On the other hand, am I right to think that the tie is something you came up with?
Mike is the one who took the older photo of Dave and I.
Hey Andy. I'm exhausted by two days of telephone calls and I suppose it ain't over yet. Still, this has been one of the single greatest honors I ever had. The outpouring of love, well wishes, condolences and offers of help have been tremendous.
And yes, I made Dave put on the pink tie. Also took the photo. Erik Bowers took the following...

David Hobbs _ Michael
David was loved by many many people.
That picture that Erik took had to be taken on that Little Tujunga Survey those two were involved with. Those two would spend days searching for one corner in terrain that I would not venture in to.
David was, and still is, my good friend.
Im still kinda numb
Remembering David Hobbs
The first time I met David was in Burbank. We were doing an as built of a property who had built some walls into flood control R/W.
All of a sudden this guy who looked like Ho Chi Min races up in this big red 4wd rig that looked like it was made in the 60's. David jumps out and very politely asks us if we were licensed to do surveys in California.
The picture was taken about 5 minutes after he got an answer to his question.
