Can anyone here give me what would be, a ball-park figure to scan a 30' sailboat exterior?
Then how complicated would the scanning of the interior become ... and cost?
I still like to play with stuff like this and think it would really be fun to play with and maybe ... some day, when I have extra cash sitting around, I might give this a shot.

Field work to do a job like that with a Faro scanner would take no more than a few hours, presuming the thing is out of the water and out in the open. Registering the scans might take a few hours to several hours.
The time you spend mapping depends on the degree of detail you want mapped. I suppose that you could easily spend a couple days at that.
That's truly amazing ... I had expected, timewise, something like an hour or so to actually do the exterior and maybe an hour to do the interior.
Evidently, the use of a laser scanner involves a lot of prep time and evidently, a lot of computer time to separate out the pertinent data?
yes, contrary to every advertisement there is alot more than just turning it on and getting scan data. Actually obtaining the data is the easiest part. Its the office work that will kill you if you dont know what you are doing.
You might check out Autodesk ReCap Auto Registration to learn more about office protocol. The example takes only a few seconds.
Cyclone registration has been no problem. I was just making a point that its not always as easy as what the laser scanner salesman makes it out to be. Especially with no scanning experience. We perform scans daily and have a complete scanning department that has about every software imaginable.

I did something similar to this about 3 years ago w/ a Leica C10 Scanner. Had it set at the standard scan settings and by myself it took literally all day. I was running back and forth, did 360* around the vessel and topside with some interior scans as well. Like some others have said, its the acquisition that is the "easy" part - its the what you want to "do" with it that is really where the time gets involved.
Scanning is stupid easy and wont take a ton of time. It's the deliverable that is time consuming depending on your customers needs.
