@wendell?ÿ The problem I have with "magic links" (hadn't heard what they were called before) is that I open a tab to a website, enter my email. Switch to the email tab or if it isn't open I have to open it, click the link. I now have two tabs open for that website.?ÿ
I know there are people who keep dozens of tabs open at a time...I'm not one of them. That's my personal hangup though!?ÿ
Personally, I see no advantage to that.
?ÿ
You can put me down for nine at the moment.?ÿ Sometimes a few more or a few less.?ÿ But never less than about five.
I'm guessing that Wendell is thinking of keeping spammers from hijacking a legitimate account like yours and posting their junk under your name.?ÿ ?ÿIn other words, the security of our accounts is a bigger deal to him than it is to us.?ÿ
@holy-cow That's not so bad! I usually have 3-4 at home on my not-too-high-powered pc (Chrome is such a memory hog). Work may get up to 8-12 at a time. but unless I'm doing research that many tabs is a sign that I'm code-switching too much and not really getting a lot done by because I'm too distracted.?ÿ
I've heard of people deciding to clean up their browsers because they have 50-100 tabs open.?ÿ
Magic links don't replace the existing login system. They make it easier for people who can't find their password to get logged in.
@norman-oklahoma @bill93?ÿ And you don't have to remember a password for the site because it assumes that your email account is safe instead.
@ken-salzman
I grew up knowing the ones a little further North as the Beacon Newburgh (back when it was only one span) and the Mid-Hudson, not the Ham Fish Jr and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Also it was still the Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge (not the walkway over the Hudson), at least the other one is still the Rip Van Winkle (but give them time and I'm sure it'll be named after a Cuomo (biting my tongue as I type)
If i see a discussion that others in my little world here would be interested in I send them a link, in our office we have our acquisition staff comprised of a couple people from the Title Industry and a few others who are new to the game and learning very well, as well as our property management staff who also step into assist the acquisition staff if needed and our Right-of-Way chief is a certified appraiser. I can see where Nate may have a valid viewpoint.
@wendell This would be a cool feature!?ÿ Another idea related to logging in would be to forward/return to the originating page.?ÿ For example, I go here to comment, https://surveyorconnect.com/community/surveying-geomatics/did-you-know-2/paged/6/ but I'm not logged in so I click the login button, complete that and land here, https://surveyorconnect.com
I suggest you give limited powers to a number of the posters here.
Power to delete spam. Just the basics.
Assistance with passwords, moving threads from one area, to another.
It's the old "Organize, Delegate, Supervise" routine.?ÿ
Some of my top pics for "assistant patrol" would be Holy Cow, Andy J, and of course, there are a few regulars here, who would do this, no pay, but we're addicts anyway.
This whole site needs to be set up so it can be mostly managed by novices, with occasional surgery, from you. This way, it uses less of your time.
Then, expand it.
You have already said a polite no to this direction. (Acknowledged).
But, if it can be done, I think it's a genuine opportunity, that someone will eventually do, even if it's not you.
I may be naive, as to what that means. (I hate it when I get a call, minimizing my work, and trying to get it cheap).?ÿ
I'm suggesting a semi- Facebook situation, whereby its either grow with it, or bail. I think an engineer forum along side would be fantastic. And, a forestry forum, (see arborist forum). Just make a list of all we do in a year.
Fix ATV, put slime in tires, buy flagging, answer phone, schedule jobs, put new batteries in ATV, new batteries in GPS, replace base batteries, shop for new GPS, new computers. In fact, read rplstoday, and Google some weird word, we never saw before....
A kind of Facebook for nerds, surveyors, engineers, tax assessors, land workers, foresters, tree management persons, farmers, fence construction, and construction. A site set up with a lobby, and 20-100 other connected and related disciplines. Accident mappers, drones, lidar, flood control, as it gets bigger, as it grows, it would at some point need more managers.....
It may not be your cup-o-tea, but it will someday be someone's cup.?ÿ
It's a place where either you, or the next generation will be.
Thank you,
Nate
@nate-the-surveyor?ÿ Esri's GeoNet AKA forums does this. Beyond the forum website "owners", some employees and users who hang out there regularly and seem to be trustworthy get limited permissions to swat spam posts and users, limited ability to move posts between topic areas, etc. Particularly having users and employees in multiple time zones helps catch spammers posting at umpteen o'clock Pacific time where Esri headquarters is located.
