I know Nate will have no advice on this one.

But I'd like to hear from you have gone under the knife. How bad is the pain? If I do it on Friday can I get back in the field by Monday?

Pain don't hurt & Yes. The worst was the shot (guess where) they give as the local. Seriously, post-op, hardly any pain. Frozen peas, as always, make a good ice-pack

I agree with Butch. It's really not that bad; and mine was more than 30 years ago. I would imagine that it's even easier today.

Vasectomy (long)

Ok, 1 year to the day after my second child was born, I gave into my wife to have a vasectomy. Well, I wanted to use this one doc that gave you lots of drugs, but someone else told her to use this other doc (we'll call him a veterinarian).

So I show up, do the consultation, and after he gets my pants down and shaves me, he has to leave. WTF???? No gown, just spread eagle for everyone to see.

Anyway, he comes back from what could have only been 18 holes as he was gone for ever it seemed, and he takes a 9" needle (no kidding) and fills it with litacaine (sp) and stick it in my sac. I don't care who you are, this hurts like hell at the vet but not at the doc with drugs. Then he proceeds to speak in some Chinese language (I think, but could have been Veitnamese) and cuts, cuts some more, pulls (this is one weird sensation bro) clips, burns, and stiches up. Takes about 30 minutes (it seemed like hours).

Then, as I go to leave and pay the copay, they say no, we need $300 now. Like they'd give me back my procedure. The doc in the other town said it was a $20 copay.

Anyway, 13 years later, it's not all that bad, but do your research. Go to one that gives you benzo's ahead of time for the nervousness, and vicatin after for the pain.

My vet, when I asked him about boxers or briefs, he said whatever I wanted. I was wearing wind pants and boxers. Go for the crap-kickin' wranglers and briefs bro. Then when I asked the vet about pain meds, he said advil would be fine. NOT! Get Class II drugs.

So I couldn't walk for 4 days and when I could, it felt like I'd been riding a horse for years. Lots of folks laughed.

Oh, one more, thing, remember that 6 week period your wife was supposed to wait, but you pressured her into it early, get ready for payback. I thought my stuff would explode and she didn't miss a chance to come and mess with me. I waited two weeks, and at the "OH" moment, I was sure I was going to have stuff pop everywhere. It didn't, but it was a little scary.

Hopefully, my little story has brought a smile to your face and made you aware of the facts that some doctors are medical doctors, and some are veternarians who don't give a crap about your mental or physical well being.

Good luck dude!!!!!

Mine was

over 25 years ago but there was minimal pain. IF, and that's big if, you pay attention to your doctor and sit on an ice pack as much as possible over the weekend, you SHOULD be able to get back in the field Monday. There WILL be some swelling, but if you stay seated (on the ice pack) it should be minimal. The WORST was the little hairs growing back, itch like crazy.

no biggie but plan on a week on the couch.

ice and regular motrin should be sufficient.

The worst part is when they tug on something down there; it feels like they are pulling your brain down into your neck but that only lasts a few seconds each side 🙂

Hurts a bit, but I imagine labor pains are worse.
Two bags of frozen peas are a must.
Don't go on a cold day or the nurse might laugh at you.
You should be able to go back to work on Monday, but I have heard horror stories.
Best thing is you will never have to wear a "raincoat" again.

You silly fools. It's the wife who needs to get fixed. She's the one that doesn't want to get pregnant. The only reason a guy should ever get fixed is if he's afraid someone will show up unannouced on his doorstep one day with a baby on the way. His wife would probably not be very sympathetic---EVER AGAIN!!!

I had a buddy who got a vasectomy at his wife's request and then caught her banging a co-worker.

Vasectomy (long)

Damn Kris, that's the funniest thing I've read here in a while!!

Vicodin YES! tighty whiteys? YES!

and I'd be sure to make it last as long as possible on the couch, especially since baseball just started. good timing!
I WOULD NOT expect to be up and running on monday. unless they have really changed the procedure... mine was about 7 years ago. i didn't have to be talked into it, great move. cheaper than birth control drugs (and safer) no hassles with condoms, no worries about a surprise kid coming along..

a family story is a female relative had to get something removed (gall bladder I think). She said while you're in there cut my tubes too. Doc said, silly woman, your gall bladder is no where near your ovaries. Well they got in there and I guess her innards are more compact than usual because the Doc sees her tubes right there in plain view. So they went to find the husband to get the sign off and he had gone to get lunch. So they closed her up and he had to go get the V-job which apparently his sperms really wanted to get out so they had to do it twice after his first test came back positive. Ouch.

Vasectomy - TWICE

I enjoyed the procedure so much I had it done twice...

V1 in '94 $350
After numerous questions and confirmations from the Dr. prior to the procedure...necessary since it should be considered as if it will render you sterile permanently.
Indian Doc, with a "sterile" bedside manner, went right to work directly after strategically placing injections. Not enough time for the Lidocaine or whatever to start working. Felt like he was using my vas to retrieve my kidneys...but I made it.
Went to work the next day...a lot of walking...too soon. Black & blue tennis balls.

Divorce '95.
Married a new and better version '99.
Decided we must break the tie between hers and mine...2 boys, 2 girls.

Reversal in May '99 $3,500
A very different procedure that is a lot more fun to talk about while having a beer. (Great new urologist I'll keep 'til I'm back in diapers)

Expecting by the 4th of July (she raped me a week after the procedure:-D )

9 months later our tiebreaker arrived healthy...Boys 3, Girls 2. Saw my urologist in the elevator the day of delivery..."Thanks Doc!"

V2 in '00 $350
A couple valium to take the edge off and a practically painfree experience.

BTW, there's a few guys here I'd highly recommend undergo the procedure BEFORE they procreate. 😛

Thirty years ago, I was in the hospital for something minor (back then they actually admitted you for minor things). My roommate had just been snipped, and the doctor must have done something not quite right because the guy was bleeding internally and also just enough to be messy externally. He spent a very uncomfortable holiday there before they opened him up again and fixed the problem.

My dad had one in the early 70's and he felt so good the next day that he decided to mow the lawn, after all he had a riding mower and that should qualify as taking it easy per the doctors instructions. Right? Not exactly. For him it was more like black and blue soft-balls and the next 6 weeks on the couch. I would give myself a little more than 2 days before returning to the field.
