I'm totes jealous. One of my favorites, but I've never seen him live. Some friends saw him in a notorious Eugene Oregon show in 1976 where he was so $hit faced he just mumbled noises that were sort of in tune with the tortured sounds he slapped out of the strings on his guitar. The crowd was none to happy. Later in the evening he got pulled over going north in the southbound lane of I-5. But there are probably dozens of towns across the US that can be substituted with "Eugene Oregon" with the same story from that period of his life. But old Jacky Jack Double Trouble has mellowed with age and is going strong so maybe I'll get a chance. Have fun!

Along the same subject I am recouping from knee replacement surgery and the next book in the bedside pile is "Without Getting Killed or Caught - The Life and Music of Guy Clark". Jerry Jeff figures prominently in the index. It should be an entertaining read.

Scott, you got it all wrong. It's a cautionary tale. You are NOT supposed to do that.

You're thinking of Steven Tyler...

Oh yeah, that's right he was the same guy that was in the group "The Monkeys" at one time with Mike Dolan, Bob Marley and Wayne Newton right?

Hey sometimes the wind is blowing so hard, and from all directions, you do what you have to do.

You got a point there... I lived in Texas for about 5 years and it is a great environment for free range wind. Sometimes so much so that it blows every direction at once and pulls trailers and cows into the sky.

I attended the University of Houston in 1981/82. It was primarily a commuter school, in a bad neighborhood, so there wasn't many places for those of us living on campus to hang out nearby; the best option was a place called "University Pizza" , across Calhoun Road. I'm not sure how many songs were actually on the jukebox, because only four got played (over and over and over): Sangria Wine, Pissin' in the Wind, Family Tradition, and Whiskey River. By about 10:00 PM on any night those four turned into a 100 person sing along every time they were played.

This was back before the designated driver days...so it was perfectly acceptable for a business to put on "drinking contests' where you got together eight man teams and saw how many pitchers of beer you could down in 60 minutes. A couple of times we would bring in a pair of "ringers" for our usual 'team', twin brothers who were both 7'+ tall......#50 & #52 there below, both a couple of inches taller than Hakeem Olajuwon standing between them.

The story behind "Up against the wall redneck mother"

BTW, I saw Jerry Jeff and the boys at the Capital Theater sometime in the 70s (I think...I might have been a bit "beamed up" at the time).

The title alone assures this one is a classic:

You were in Houston a few years after me. I saw Jerry Jeff at a little place called the Texas Opry House. That was 40 years ago so there is no way I could tell you where it was but they had some great talent for such a small place. JJ Walker, David Allen Coe, Jackson Browne and others. That was the first place I had ever seen that served Margaritas by the pitcher. EWWWWWW!!!!
