Excellent chanterelle season in Athens this year
?ÿ
Never heard of them. Wiki says they are the most flavorful and sought after by some folks.They sound good.
They are great to cook with and we have them all over the Pacific Northwest forests.
Don't get them around here, but the morels went insane this year with all the fires last summer.
?ÿ
@williwaw?ÿ Yep, morels are the best and if lucky you can fill a garbage bag with them then dry them for use in eggs, steaks, pastas etc. 'till next year.?ÿ I also love Boletus but they are much harder to find.?ÿ Other than that, I'm not much of a mushroom hunter for fear of killing myself due to misidentification so I stick to what I know.
What bothers me is the commercial hunters pull guns if I forage in their "turf" and demand I leave post haste although it's USFS land.?ÿ That's not right. I don't want to get killed so I acquiesce?ÿ and leave immediately?ÿ but there's something wrong with this picture;
When I lived in Maine I was able to find and eat a wide variety of fungi.?ÿ My favorite is the black trumpet (aka horn of plenty). In the Northeast, they're usually found in groves of American Beech.?ÿ?ÿ
Many of the species of choice edible mushrooms are easy to indentify and don't have any look-a-likes. Of course the mushroom hunter maxim still holds, "There are old mushroom hunters and there are bold mushroom hunters, but there are no old bold mushroom hunters".
"I eat 'em all fresh. yum.."
Whadda do just shove the whole thing in and chew? Ever since I saw worms crawling out of strawberries I've been creeped out about certain things even remotely resemble a strawberry. I ain't against eatin' bugs or worms provided they are served separately. ????
@flga
Just rinse 'em. knock off the stems and saute in butter. Ain't nothing better. The morels around here come with an ample supply of tiny mites that live inside the 'shroom...best to rinse them a couple of times. 😉
Most grubs and worms are high in protein don't you know? People that can't eat food that isn't wrapped in cellophane do't know what they're missing!
Boletus aka King Bolete, are my hands down favorite, haven't yet stumbled on a reliable spot to find them, very hit and miss around these parts. I'm lucky to stumble on half a dozen a year.
I have a site down here in florida that was covered in chanterelles last year, i managed to fill a backpack in less than 30 minutes!
theyre some of my favorite to hunt for
