SWMBO recently change our internet provider to Hughesnet, a satellite based company. our old email addresses were w/ our old provider which will drop us as soon as the bill isn't paid.

can anyone suggest a reliable location which is a preferrably cheap to no cost alternative that won't jack you around.

i suspect they all collect info and spread it to whomever or use it to gig you w/ advertising.

thanks in advance for any good advice or options.

My friend uses a gmail account, and seems to like it. I don't know the cost.

I have had a netzero email account for years. I have not problem with it. I think it costs about $12 a year for the mega mail option. I do get a lot of junk email, but I just delete it. It's not to big of a deal.

Gmail is free.

I use Google Apps, which allows me to tie my domain name into Gmail, so I don't have to use whatever@gmail.com. In fact, I use it for the email addresses here in the forum. It is free for up to 10 users per domain. If you want to pay $5/month (or $50/year), you can get Google Apps for Business, which allows you to turn off the ads. http://www.google.com/intl/en/enterprise/apps/business/pricing.html

You will not get away from the ads with any free email provider.

gmail has been good for me for a number of years. Independent of my service provider. Free. Not that many ads.

BTW, I use it with the Thunderbird email client, also free. In fact, I use a portable app version that runs off a thumb drive so I can get my email on any computer I happen to be sitting at.

gmail is free, the ads are few, and less noticable than the ones here.

With Gmail, there's no need for the thumb drive if you just use a browser. The online interface is quite nice. My favorite part about it is how smart it is when it comes to putting email conversations into threads, much like this forum.

🙂

Gmail is free and nearly bullet proof. I like it a lot. I use it for my spam account and not my business, but I hardly ever get spam in it so it's great. It has lots of filters for culling that stuff out and after 6 years and never deleting an email, I think I've hit 1% of the data they give me.

I like my gmail accounts. I also use google voice (free long distance phone calls anywhere in US) and google maps.

I am quite sure they are tracking the heck out of me, but, I like them.

As for ads, those of us who use firefox (or firefox clone) will say, "what ads, I don't see no stinking ads".......

I just like having my important stuff on something I own and control. This whole cloud thing is pretty cool, but I worry that one day Google will have a problem and all my correspondence will go }poof{. The gmail server does makes a great backup.
