After that time while cutting grass, a black hornet got me in the soft meat behind the thigh. I literally thought I had been shot.
Now, I never ever wear shorts.
Pants all the time. khaki or blue denim.

My breathing becomes short pants. And gasping, sometimes.
I don't own a pair of shorts of any kind! Never will.
Short Pants?
You'll love them. I bought a couple from his recommendation and will be buying more soon. The leg pockets are great for flagging, however as mentioned the kakhi seems to stain a bit, or at least shows it more.
Regarding the main topic, shorts are only allowed where I work when we're doing hydro surveying, any deviation and you're going to hate life.

Pants at work: always. I used to wear jeans all the time but have switched to tactical cargo pants. I think they are tougher, lighter weight and I can carry more stuff in the pockets.
I have NEVER wore shorts surveying, even in an urban environment, and don't plan on it. Forget the OSHA rules or your insurance carrier, what about briars and other things. It's strictly protection.
Our O&G clients require FR pants, FR shirts, gloves, ANSI z87.1 safety glasses, steel toed boots, and chainsaw chaps if cutting. They don't care how hot it is either. They do comp us some extra time if the PPE slows us down, but they want us to be careful.
I wear short sleeves to the office, and long sleeves to the field, regardless of temperature. Those old farmers you see in those old pictures with big hats, long sleeves, and long pants, they knew how to beat the heat outside.
When I went from ball caps and short sleeves to straw hats and long sleeves and 20 years old, I found instantly, that I could work longer with the same energy, and outwork all of my crew members.
It makes sense that if you played football, they made you go sit in a cool dark room to keep the sun from zapping your energy before the game.

I agree with you there, I do the same and some folks can't understand wearing long sleeves in the summer but I do, it retains moisture and keeps the direct sun off you.
Look at the desert dwellers, do they have on shorts, flip flops and a tee shirt? Nope they cover up.

No money? Also their pigmentation is suited more for the sun unlike lighter skinned people.
My peeps are mostly from southern Italy..not real familiar with being 'lighter skinned' 😉
No Shorts, ever. Mostly safety considerations and White Leg Syndrome. My legs haven't been tan since grade school.
for field work - long pants are required, period. office has a casual Friday, and it's understood that summer days over 100 degrees means shorts are ok for work so long as you have no planned meeting with clients.
personally, I'd like to be in shorts all year, and currently wear shorts away from work about 9 months/year.
upon retirement, we'll being "going where the climate suits our clothes"

Most of our jobs require full FRC gear. Either pants and long sleeves or coveralls. With the Texas heat you are pretty much zapped at the end of the day.
