Joe Paterno has said he will not continue coaching after his contract expires in two months.
Penn State trustees have told PSU President Graham Spanier to quit or be fire tonight.
The US Departemnt of Education will investigate Penn State.

In an update to the Sandusky timeline I note that the 1998 shower incident was investigated by the Pennsylvania State Department of Public Welfare. Will they be fired to? This is 4 years before the Sandusky ball ended up in Paterno's court.
"Fall 2000: A janitor sees Mr. Sandusky in the shower at the PSU football complex with Victim 8. The boy was pinned against the wall while Mr. Sandusky performed a sex act on him. The janitor tells other janitorial staff and his boss. His supervisor tells him how to make an official report. Such a report is never made; there is discussion among janitorial staff of concern about their jobs if they report the incident." will that janitor supervisor be fired?

More on Spanier later.

I have obsessions, I'm really happy college football isn't one of them.
I like to read about hobo culture among other things.
Just weird, I guess.

That janitor needs to have his arse pinned against the wall in a shower with big bubba. I cannot even begin to understand how anyone could see such a thing being committed against a child and not do anything. That sorry SOB would have never made it out of that shower alive.
Graham Spanier Has Submitted His Resignation
But the Board of Trustees has not yet acknowledged it. A bit of information about Spanier.
He is a sociologist and family therapist by training, Mr. Spanier has used his pulpit as Penn State University president to weigh in on national issues from campus drinking and illegal music downloading to eroding public support of higher education. He is a noted researcher and author who is the founding editor of the Journal of Family Issues. He is a family sociologist as well as a demographer and a marriage and family therapist. He has a doctoral degree in sociology.
More than anyone he knows what is required in such situations as this one man sex scandal. That he did not act differently is a rather clear statement that he was lied to and/or simply misinformed by the staff under him who were recently fired.
It is my interpretation that Paterno and Spanier, two of the most capablr educators in any US university are being thrown under the bus so that everyone else who failed can feel better about themselves.

Yeah...WTF...how can the janitor live with himself?
He should have gone in the shower, punched Sandusky in the face, got the boy out of there, then went directly to the police. Admittedly, it can be hard to tell how we'd react to a given situations w/o being there, but this is a time there wasn't a decision to make.
Penn State Update, Paterno Is Fired Immediately
Paterno and Spanier have both been fired by the Board of Trustees.
This could cause a major revolt in PA.

Paterno Fired
I never thought it would end like this...tragic all the way around...especially for the victims.
Paterno Fired
> I never thought it would end like this...tragic all the way around...especially for the victims.
Dittos on the tragic. However this huge mess is FAR from over. There will be some major heads rolling, major charges made, major restitution for victims, and who knows what the NCAA will do with Penn State. I envision many students transferring, especially those on football scholorships.
The entire thing is just one big frigged up horrible mess. You can't even call it an event, because it went on so long. Sickening....
As far as Sat game goes... Go Big Red!!!
Paterno Fired
The janitor is in a nursing home suffering from dementia and cannot testify. It appears he was coerced into keeping quiet to save his and other janitor's jobs. And evidently has suffered from depression since the incident.
This crap went on far too long because no one had the cajones to stop it. The more that is revealed the more horrifying it becomes.
Institutions and their image are more cherished than the boys who are victims.
Clean house and if the university suffers so be it.
Who wants to send their student athlete to Penn State now?
Penn State Update, Paterno Is Fired Immediately
I for one can not understand the mentality of those who continue to say that Paterno, McQueary, the janitors, and any Penn State official that was made aware of Sandusky's behavior (the many eye witnessed events) did all that they could do to prevent more children from being sodomized.
McQueary and the two janitors should have forcibly stopped Sandusky when they caught him abusing children in the shower, and then immediately called the police.
Paterno and the other Penn State officials should have called the police immediately when they were told of what the eye wittesses saw.
Each man failed to do what was right, and this allowed Sandusky to continue to prey upon more children FOR YEARS.
Penn State firing Paterno and the other men is not good enough.
Paterno and every man that had knowledge of these crimes but remained silent should face criminal charges.
Paterno Fired
SMU got the death penalty in football for paying players to get a competitive advantage over rival schools.
Ohio State, Southren Cal, and countless other schools have been punished for the head coach turning his head the other way while players sold jerseys or other memorabilia so they could have some spending money.
What should the NCAA do to a school where the head coach and other authority figures turned their heads the other way while one of it's coaches sodomized little boys for over a decade?
If the NCAA does nothing to Penn State, they should never punish another school for paying players.

I usually think Rick Reilly is the most overrated sports writer of all time, but not this time:
Paterno Fired
Plain old fashioned cowardice is what it looks like to me. Whether Paterno is legally liable or not I couldn't say but he certainly should have done everything in his power to sink Sandusky the minute he found out about what happened. It would have been a very courageous thing to do.
Paterno Fired
Paterno should have been fired 20 years ago. I am one Pennsylvanian who does not think much of him at all, never have.
Paterno Fired
No kidding Tim. The horrific criminal aspects will play out in court. The emotional aspects will go on forever, especially for the victims & families.
What will be morbidly interesting is just how deep the NCAA goes, and when it goes there. Major sanctions will no doubt be enforced, as they should, but I just wonder if it will go to all sports, other programs, or just football. Likely as this whole mess unravels other programs will some how get identified.
