Well it seems like they have it all figured out!
The Civil/Survey faculty frequently received calls offering "simple projects" like this. Usually included a statement that the small project would be good training exercise. One to five acre topographic surveys or staking a garage/pole barn, no boundary required, were also frequent requests.
Always tried to explain that as a state funded college we could not contract for private work. Several then argued that since their taxes paid for the equipment we OWED them a survey.
They really do not have it all figured out!
Yeah, I get one or two each Academic year, too. Usually, they're doing my students a favor ...

That's great. Tell them the minor caveat. You will do a complete certified survey @ your standard costs, and then will gratefully let the students do the exercise and you will use your official survey to check their results against. haha They'll pay for a full-blown survey and have it resurveyed the same number of times for all your student crews to each do the survey again.

Several problems with that:
- ... I still can't use college equipment or materials for the initial survey and I haven't had any personal equipment since 1986.
- ... Off campus site may have hazards to students and taking them into such an environment may not be covered by college insurance. Filing for a field trip permit to insure coverage requires days to weeks of prior planning.
- ... College has general liability coverage and does not carry professional liability/errors and omissions (E&O) coverage. My employer always carried coverage and I have not had personal E&O coverage for many years.
Many headaches for little or no return. [sarcasm]Also imagine an irate neighbor situation with five 3 person student crews present. Might tend to disrupt the flow of the class a little. May be one of the above mentioned hazards to students.[/sarcasm]
