I have an old car that I don't drive. It (1984 Porsche 944) runs good, but the driver's side window is stuck in the down position, A/C doesn't work, etc. I did recently got an antique plate for it, so yearly inspections are no longer required, not do I have to renew the plates anymore.
I had it parked last year in a corner of my driveway, and when I went to start it nothing would work. It turns out that a groundhog had got up in there and chewed all of the wires and the gas line, even chomped on the battery until it leaked (hope that killed him, but I doubt it). So I replaced all of that, and it woks again.
I have it in my garage right now (since September), but that is where I park my jeep. I want to put it in my barn, but I know the groundhogs get in there all the time.
So, I am looking for ideas to keep the groundhogs OUT of the engine compartment. I guess if I wanted to realy work at it, I could put chicken wire or something like that all around the bottom of it so they couldn't crawl under, but I am looking for something easier. I have heard that maybe mothballs would work, or maybe something else?
Only thing I know about groundhog's is what I learned in the movie Groundhog Day. But if they are of any kin to that horse you are riding in your avatar I sympathize with you. 😉
Cripes! Radar, it kills your wife and kids too?:-O
this guy might be able to help:

There was a neighborhood local whose weapon of choice for pest was electricity
He would connect a circuit thru a garbage can, wire, gate door hitch and/or anything that the pest would come in contact with.
Started out with a low watt light bulb in a light socket attached to the circuit and kept increasing the wattage until the pest gave up or gave out or became toast.
I remember a sign on the entry, "Don't ring doorbell before 2pm". He worked shift work and meant every word of it.
😉
I don't know if this will work for groundhogs or not, but I read somewhere years ago that scented dryer sheets place under the hood will keep field mice from getting in and building nests in the air cleaner and on the intake manifold. I put some in a couple places under the hood near where they had access to the manifold and air cleaner and haven't had any mice nests since.
He just said he wanted to get rid of them; he didn't say he wanted to be freindly about it...:snarky:
If you want to be freindly; live trap is the only way to go. Catch Phil using his favorite treat and then gently let him go, out in the country, wher he can chew on someone else's cherished antique...;-)
Have a great day I know I will,
Dougie
Keep several of these in the garage:
Don't feed them too often. You WANT them to be hungry.
Almost forgot...
get several of these, too:
Paden is right on this one.
Even an old retired 16 year old cat in a bag:
Will easily run off a 30 or 40 pound groundhog.
Had a bunch of Rock Chucks this year, which is sort of western version of a ground hog. 12 gauge shotgun worked pretty good on them.
Haven't tried it on groundhogs, but Pine Sol cleaner poured straight out of the bottle onto the ground does a good job of keeping raccoons away.
