This just showed up in my inbox this morning. I hadn't seen anything on this site about it. Thought you all might like to know...
If there is a "go fund me" for them... Ill contribute.
Wow, this is horrible news. I have pinned this to the top of the RPLS Today Facebook page in hopes that we can reach and even surpass the $25k goal.
Just contributed a little while ago. They seem to be averaging $100/hr.
That is sad news.
I think Jerry had amassed quite a collection of various things.

Add a donation from us as well, Pea.
Lost everything except the clothes we had on due to a house fire 30yrs ago this month.
Neighbors pushed the company's Ford Bronco across the road to save it.
Had to tell my kids that it was just stuff that can be replaced.
Fell the loss and hope insurance was paid up and for enough.
Glad you two were not injured.
So sorry to hear about this bad news for the Penry family.
Strangely ironic that the fire occurred on June 6 considering Jerry's scholarship and writings on WW2
I can't even imagine how devastating it must be. Donating.
Sorry this happened...Donating
Had anyone heard directly from Jerry about this? There are so many innovative scammers out there, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a bogus finding campaign going to an imposter.
And what about insurance coverage? More info, please.

Jerry's house indeed burned down:

The go fund me site looks legit, but it would be comforting if someone had heard from him...
It appears that the organizer of the go fund me site is the county surveyor in York County. He responded to me that Jerry is just getting his voice back from the effects of the smoke.
EDIT: Mr Google also "reports" that most of the donors listed on the site are other licensed surveyors in Nebraska.
Unfortunately, this is legit. The bad news circulated that morning between many local surveyors about Jerry and Jenny??s house. I received the ??Go fund me? notice this morning from our State Surveyor??s Association. Jerry is very passionate about surveying and the history of surveying. He has had numerous article published in survey magazines and has published his own books. I have attended several surveying conferences in Nebraska and Kansas where he was a speaker. They had accumulated many pieces of unique survey related equipment, performed hours of research and is an excellent source of information. Here is a link to their website if you would like to see some of his work.
What I'm still not understanding is how a guy like Jerry, who's super-organized and meticulous in his work, could have lived without insuring his house for fire. What am I missing?
Anyone that loses their house and belongings needs immediate cash.
While some insurance policies will release 5% within a few days or weeks, the real insurance payoff is probably a few months away.
A meal or two or enough for a change of clothes was very appreciated when my family needed it.
I am glad to help be it ever so little compared to your loss.

Thanks for posting this.
Everyone on this board should be made aware.
Heartfelt wishes go out to Jerry and family.

What you are missing is that insurance will never take care of everything and that they will be fighting with insurance companies for at least a year. Jerry did not and would not ask for help, but anything that people can afford will help them take care of things while they are trying to get back on their feet. Jerry has done a LOT to promote our profession and he deserves more than thanks.

Having had family who lost everything (to floods) and were insured I can assure you that IMMEDIATE cash is very much needed. Yes they will probably get eventually get the money for the home and belongings (or most of it) but they have to live until then. If you have only the clothes on your back you need help, and Jerry needs it.

Thanks for posting! I've lived through a small fire in our house and I can tell you I wouldn't wish that mess on anyone. I can't imagine a total loss. Happy to chip in to help, if for nothing else than the fact that he is a surveyor in need.
