Handed mine off to my spouse who will hit the magic 65 in 2022.
You should start the process of signing up 3 months before the month you turn 65.
If your birthday is the 1st of a month, they treat you as in the month before.
If you are already getting SS benefits, it's a lot simpler when you go to sign up for Medicare.
Also, talk to a really good health insurance broker about supplemental policies. We have an exceptionally great broker who has steered us onto exactly what we needed. The premiums for supplemental are not cheap, but: My wife has had several major hospitalizations and surgeries, and I've had a few minor ones. Over the past ten years our total out of pocket expense has been zero, as in not a penny. Everything covered.
So far being on GoodRX I've saved about $2,700 over having a prescription insurance plan. Mileage will vary, but it's something to look into.
