What's on your Bucket List?
Mines not very big, in fact, I probably only have one thing I'd really like to do before I kick the bucket and that is to see the desert in bloom. There's probably some other cool stuff I'd like to do but wouldn't regret not doing before I die.
I'd like to make it a road trip and maybe include Las Vegas. Google says it's about a 20 hour drive so I think if I go with somebody else, we can drive straight through, taking turns driving.
What's the best time to go? I'm thinking about planning for a 4 or 5 day trip, sometime between the last couple weeks in March through April and watching the weather down there and head out when it looks good.
I'm thinking about the Mojave or maybe Red Rocks, north of LV, or is there someplace better?
With the impending doom of 12/21/2012 looming in the near future, this might be the last spring I'll get a chance.;-)

My bucket list is STILL too long to list!
But...IMO the Mojave Desert is okay, but the Sonoran Desert beats it hands down. Once you are in Vegas (ugh), keep going down towards Tucson (or thereabouts).

To be warm, well fed and comfortable until the time, then go in my sleep or quickly. Any joys beyond that are gravy.

Well said, and right on!
I beg to differ Loyal...IMO The Sonoran is all full of cactus, thorns, and Gila Monsters.... Where the Mojave is wide open barrenes of beautiful nothing ...March in Death Valley
Liked both, drank more water in the Mojave. More life in the Sonora and a little different history, people, except for miners and prospectors, crossed the Mojave. People other than prospectors lived in and around the Sonora.

I have never
been a big fan of the desert...but if you like it...good for you...more room for me by the ocean!!
My view is probably somewhat biased. I spent YEARS WORKING in the Mojave, but only pleasure trips to the Sonoran.
I would also highly recommend a trip up trough the Four-Corners area as well (Worked there too).

Desert...
I am biased..Sonoran Desert, hands down. But that's cause I lived there. 🙂
St. James Gate Brewery, Dublin.
Road trip is good/ok, but Puleeze, NO desert for me. Saw a child's dose of desert crossing Washington state once. Has to be hilly, green with spring's first onslaught of leaves. Close to my family so we can all give our best to each other. Winning the lottery would be nice so I could "make it happen". Being content if the bucket goes to hell and is forgotten along with the movie.
I'm a selfish pig. I would prefer to ruin certain other people's bucket lists for them.
Don't really know of anywhere that I feel I really should see in person. Perhaps, tracing the family tree back with the ability to locate where each generation of each branch lived the longest. Then go to each of those places and try to walk in their footsteps and visualize what it might have been like to live in that area during that time period. Perhaps look at structures or whatever that they, too, would have seen, basically unchanged since then.
Wow, that flower is wonderful. What is it Angel, can it grow in Wisconsin?

I'm pretty sure that's a Saguaro Cactus, and I don't think that they would do too well in your climate.

It is indeed a Saguaro cactus. I took that photo and many others when we lived in Tucson. That is probably the most beautiful bloom I've ever seen.

I agree...I found most of the desert flowers the most beautiful I've ever seen!! Those Saguaro Cacti blooms were HUGE!! Bigger than the size of a human head. 🙂
And here's a photo of my other favorite...these were about the size of a dime. 🙂 I had to use my special setting on my camera to get this close and clear.
been to Japan but always wanted to go to Europe - that and jump out of a perfectly good airplane(with a parachute attached to somebody who knows when to pull the chord:-) )
When with ACB-1 I had the opportunity to go to jump school. The Beach Masters and Beach Jumpers had billets for Fort Benning Jump School and did not have anyone who was not already qualified at that time, so they asked if any of us wanted to go. I volunteered, was accepted for a class about 4 months down the road. Sure was relieved to get orders to the Brown Water Navy in RVN before jump school started.

I jumped static line back in my early 20s, and always (kinda) wanted to try free fall. I would do the static line thing agian, BUT I would probably break something!
