The big upgrade day is coming soon... are you ready?
As of now, the upgrade is tentatively planned for the weekend of June 13-14. We are working out the specifics now.
There's a couple things you should know:
- Due to the nature of the upgrade and the "outdatedness" of this current forum software, it will not be possible to carry your existing passwords into the new software. What this means is that everyone will need to reset their passwords once the new site is live. We will provide prominent links for you or, if possible, we may send out automatic password resets in bulk.
- Aside from the passwords, EVERYTHING is being transferred to the new software. We expect there to be little to no loss of actual content from old to new. In fact, we have taken great care and pride in protecting the content so it is not lost or garbled during conversion. This should be a great relief to those who were deeply disappointed by another famous conversion about 5 years ago...
- This conversion was the primary point of the crowdfunding campaign. It was much, much, MUCH more painful than we anticipated and the other promises we made got delayed. I can't even put into words how much work this process has been, but we've learned a lot and are excited for the upcoming new chapter for our little venture. That said, we do have most of the swag ready for departure and hope to get it shipped out this month.
So thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for your continued patience. It is my belief that the software conversion will be super-awesome, but I think there will be at least a month of fallout following the conversion due to the need to assist users with the transition (requesting new passwords, etc.). I'm going to spend some time over the next couple of weeks trying to set things up to make it as painless as possible for everyone. Even so, please accept my apologies in advance if things get a bit hectic during/after the conversion has been completed.
Once the dust settles a bit, we'll start launching our other upgrades, such as mobile access and other cool features we eluded to in the crowdfunding campaign. Exciting times. I'm a little nervous, but the excitement easily trumps the nervousness.
Hang on gang, it's going to get fun...
on the edge of my chair anxious with anticipation:woot:

We all learn from this site. Thank you Wendell and Angel for everything you do.

Thanks for the spot and all the hard work it takes. And, thanks for getting me up and running in the face of larger hurdles.
To the future.
"I'm a little nervous, but the excitement easily trumps the nervousness."
Hey, that's a little like getting married!
🙂
Good for you and for us.
Looking forward to the new site.
I have a small anxiety also.
More and more, I have been reading and posting through mobile (iOS) and truthfully have had no problems.
I hope there are no major snafus to continue posting mobile.
Good luck with the launch.
Yes! :gammon:
Me, being me, sorry
I know better and I'm usually good at catching my mistakes. But apparently I missed that one.
Thanks for the reminder. 🙂
It will be better. The new site uses Responsive Web Design, which means that it "responds" based on user devices by changing the display accordingly. The fact that you can post at all from a mobile device on this old forum is purely accidental. There was no forethought whatsoever put into compatibility with mobile devices with this software -- in fact, mobile devices were but a blip on the screen when this software was developed.
Even better, the mobile app we discussed in the crowdfunding campaign will be a reality sometime soon after the launch.
Me, being me, sorry
It's a colloquialism!
Please don't make it like the POB update.
I have no problem using my phone with the site, but I have it set to display web pages in their regular format. I do not use the mobile format.
:good: :good:
Read this and thought only a computer nerd could really appreciate it fully. 🙂
Angel & Wendell-
When you've time, if you could set me straight please as it's been a long time with no glitches:
1] Will I need to recall my password ?
2] Will I be able to use the same password on my BB and my Playbook ?
3] Will I need "Angel's Guide for the Slow" or is a KISS operation for me to
continue ?
Thank you for such a great service to the profession.
Cheers,
Derek
I can't tell you how many sites I've launched over the years.
It's always nerve rattling no matter how many times you've done it.
Especially when there is a lot of code-behind.
And some people find it odd we dream about this kind of stuff at night.
E.
Hey Derek,
1. As I mentioned in my first post, everyone will have to reset their passwords. That will either be done automatically (we'd send out an email with a link to re-activate), or you would have to click a link/button on the home page to reset your password manually. We haven't decided which method we'll use just yet, but either way, it's basically just a process of resetting your password.
2. Your password is encrypted and stored securely on our website. It doesn't matter what device you login from, your password will always be the same (unless you change or reset it, of course).
3. We'll continue to help anyone who needs it and will try to keep it as simple as possible. That said, support may be a bit slow right after the conversion, since we expect to be dealing with a lot of support requests at that time.
Thank you!
Thank you for all your hard work!
