That's seriously low down. We had a backsight set up stolen twice. One guy took his time as he was ripping us off, because our set up was on a highway overpass a 1/4 mile away. But I got his plate number and good ID on his truck as I was sighting the BS while he was doing the deed....

Well that sucks!! :-@ I am going to make this a sticky so everyone can see this ASAP.

Time to keep an eye on FeebaY and Craigslist to see if these thieves try to re-sell this stuff. (which most of the time they do.)

I hope you get it all back ASAP. Please let us know if you do.

Sorry to learn of the loss, but let's get our terms straight: unless the crew was present and under threat of violence, they didn't get robbed. It sounds to me that they were the victims of theft, or -- in some states -- vehicle burglary.

that sounds about right for N Miami, 10 years ago when I was and eye man we were robbed by a 3 man team with AK's, the rodman ran off screaming and never fast him again, the party chief was knocked unconscious and I had the lucky job of handing everything to them! the hardest part was telling the boss all the equipment and truck were gone. Now that its being robbed!

Not really. Robbery intimates threats used to obtain the property

Robbery is the crime of taking or attempting to take something of value by force or threat of force and/or by putting the victim in fear. At common law, robbery is defined as taking the property of another, with the intent to permanently deprive the person of that property, by means of force or fear. Precise definitions of the offence may vary between jurisdictions. Robbery differs from simple theft in its use of violence and intimidation

Burglary (also called breaking and entering and sometimes housebreaking is a crime, the essence of which is illicit entry into a building for the purposes of committing an offense. Usually that offense will be theft, but most jurisdictions specify others which fall within the ambit of burglary. To commit a burglary is to burgle (in British English) or burglarize (in American English).

Florida
Under Florida State Statutes, "burglary" occurs when a person "enter a dwelling, a structure, or a conveyance with the intent to commit an offense therein, unless the premises are at the time open to the public or the defendant is licensed or invited to enter.[16] Depending on the circumstances of the crime, burglary can be classified as third-, second-, or first-degree felonies, with maximum sentences of five years, fifteen years, and life, respectively.[17]

I have been the victim of theft twice

The first time was a level and brand new tripod. It was set up on the side of a road in an industrial area with no traffic seeing it was a weekend. We walked about 200 feet away to recover a BM and these two guys in a pick up turned the corner and headed towards the level. The truck never stopped, the passenger just reached out the window and snagged the level while on the move. They just kept going and I never saw the level again.

The second time was the most unusual. We were in a hillside area and had set a prism rod and tripod up for a check shot. Took the shot and then turned our backs for maybe two minutes. We then started to pack up and saw that the whole setup was gone. Never saw anyone else in the area.

It sounds like the spelling police aren't going to hunt this thief down until you get your terms right......;-)

Seriously, good luck.

Obviously they do not have a very good safety program in the thief world

The OSHA fine would be more than the penalty for the theft.

Once upon a time in New Orleans ...

a friend of mine got a job from the City of New Orleans to do a topo of a common area in the middle of the nastiest, worst public housing project in the city. He went to the Police Department and paid for the biggest, tallest cop in the entire department to accompany them for the week. (I think he said the uniformed cop had a revolver with a six-inch barrel, Dirty Harry style.)

Said they had zero trouble; it was worth the extra expense and they billed the city for the security detail.

Sorry to hear that. Add it to the national registry. If you see it on craigslist, arrange to buy it and bring the local police.

Lost Equipment National Registry
Reported Stolen Equipment will be listed on the NSPS Web site

http://www.nspsmo.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=page.viewpage&pageid=676

along with the following information:

1. Description of equipment including serial number

2. Location where equipment was stolen (city / state)

3. Date the equipment was stolen

4. Contact information for responses (name, phone and email)

No way any self-respecting thief is going to sell their wares on ebay or Craig's list. I'd say the local pawn shops are the thieves' first stop. And don't believe that non-sense that the pawn shops will not buy or sale stolen property. They do it everyday.

I would say that is an oxy-moron as thieves aren't self-respecting by nature.

As far as the pawn shops, well, you're right on the money on that one.

Yes, Miami seems to be the hot spot for this kind of crime. the cops found a whole network of thieves that were focusing on survey equipment. Most likely, it's long gone on it's way to South America . You won't see it on ebay. They arrested the leader and the robbery slowed for a while, but obviously, a crime vacuum gets filled. The robbers were travelling here to the west coast as well. Cops figured they were connected with someone working the construction sites, since they would swoop in and steal stuff as soon as the surveyors were out of sight. Lunch break parking lots are a big time to get hit as well.. a van follows the crew and blocks the line of sight while the truck is broken. happens all the time.
