200 years ago, in 1824, the Tallahassee Meridian was established in what is now Cascades Park in Tallahassee, Florida. Serving as the initial point for the state of Florida, the survey monument has changed over the years with its most recent iteration in the form of a map of Florida with the point imbedded in the appropriate spot.
What’s a favorite initial point you have visited? We’d love to hear from you!

When I was in the IUOE Local 12 Surveyors Apprenticeship program, our final exam for our final year was to hike up there as a group. How cool is that?
That is pretty awesome final exam!
The initial point of the Willamette Meridian and baseline is within the city limits of Portland, Oregon and just a few miles, as the crow flies, from my home. In the 29 years I've lived here I've visited the "Willamette Stone" twice. It's a public park. If you need a place to be completely alone in the woods it's a great place to be.
Only a reference monument but.....The Beginning Point of the U.S. Public Land Survey is the point from which the United States in 1786 began the formal survey of the lands known then as the Northwest Territory, now making up all or part of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. The survey is claimed to be the first major cadastral survey undertaken by any nation. The point now lies underwater on the state line between Ohio and Pennsylvania. Because it is submerged, a monument commemorating the point is adjacent to the nearest roadway and located on the state line between East Liverpool, Ohio and Ohioville, Pennsylvania. The area around the marker was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965.[2]
Some great points to explore someday!
The point now lies underwater
Why do we always set our control where it will get wiped out?
