Hi everyone. I'm a new member here, currently a Geomatics engineering final year student at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. I'm an aspiring Land Surveyor seeking to locate in the US after my studies and currently looking for a mentor.

There is not a lot of people from my area who are educated in the field of land surveying. So I try my best to grasp as much knowledge as possible from all platforms and educate the unfortunate individuals who seek passion in the same field.

Welcome, from one of the colder parts of the US. Young surveyors are needed here, though getting authorized to work in the country is complicated. Be sure to read whatever you can find on this site about US cadastral systems.

@rplumb314 Thank you. I have a question, If I'm relocating to the US to pursue my career as a Land Surveyor, do I need to learn the state's property law/cadastral law? I believe it should be different from the South African property law isn't it?
No doubt USA boundary and property law is different from any other country. Within the USA there are some law differences between states.?ÿ Surveying in the eastern states is entirely by metes and bounds, sometimes with a need to research extensive history.?ÿ In most of the middle and western states the Public Land Survey System (PLSS) was used to create a framework that you should read about, but smaller divisions are done with metes and bounds. In most places in the PLSS deed records are fairly accessible and organized, but the states vary in the extent?ÿ to which surveys are public record.
You should do some more reading to see what you would be getting into.
Good luck in fulfilling your goals. In addition to Bill93??s comment about differences in property law among US states, there are differences in the qualifications for licensure.
I believe most US states are facing big shortfalls in the numbers of surveyors. I don??t know whether this shortage will positively impact your plans to immigrate.

Medupi, hello again if you are still monitoring this thread. Here is a link to a sort of U.S. visa lottery this fall, which it appears you are eligible to enter based on your education. As I make it out, there are about 200 entrants in the lottery for every visa that's available. But it doesn't cost anything to enter except possibly the cost of a photo--
