Hello!?ÿ I used to be active "back in the day" on the ol' POB RPLS.com forum (I recognize a lot of you from there, and btw I've changed my username slightly).?ÿ I've since acquired my professional license (Dec. 2016) and just recently (Jan 2nd) changed jobs.?ÿ I'm currently in charge of a survey department at a very small surveying & engineering firm.?ÿ I have the unfortunate situation of being surrounded by mostly different equipment and software (both data collection & CAD) than I am used to!?ÿ I feel like an FNG again!?ÿ To further complicate matters, the previous surveyor and his assistant both left before I started, so I don't have them to work alongside to learn from.?ÿ

So the reason for me joining the forum is to post up some questions on how to perform some software operations or GPS receiver operations.?ÿ

Note, I will be in attendance at the Pennsylvania Surveyor's conference next week.?ÿ

Thanks.?ÿ Can I ask a "dumb question" - will I be automatically getting emails about responses to threads I've posted in or threads I've started??ÿ Or do I need to click "Subscribe to this topic" each time manually??ÿ I didn't see anything in my account settings for email alerts or automatic subscriptions.?ÿ

Thanks,
-Garry

That's definitely not a dumb question. For now, you do have to manually check the subscribe box for new posts. I hope to implement an optional automatic subscription setting in the near future. This forum software is relatively young and still developing new features and improvements.

Welcome.?ÿ

I remember a long discussion over a mine survey you were working on.?ÿ Couldn't get it to close underground, but the same equipment gave near perfect results above ground.?ÿ There was a lot of talk about refraction but nothing definitive.?ÿ Did you ever figure that out?

Ah, yes I remember posting about that.?ÿ That was a control survey our crew was doing back in 2009 era.?ÿ It turned out that one of our tribrachs had some loose screws.?ÿ The crew was leaving the tribrachs in place on the tripods in order to speed up setup time (we were using "backsight kits" i.e. tribrach with prisms on foresight and backsight) and so the instrument was only on the "loose tribrach" every third setup.?ÿ Very fortunately, the loose tribrach was the one on the gun when we sent it in to our dealer to check it out!?ÿ

Btw, I did get an opportunity to survey a fairly big underground loop myself in 2012 (and returning in 2015).?ÿ I do not have the required MSHA training for going underground, but this particular mine was inactive yet maintained for mushroom farming so it was not under MSHA jurisdiction.?ÿ I jumped at the opportunity to survey underground and experience what it was like (albeit in almost ideal conditions and not the usual active mining conditions).?ÿ Here is a forum thread where I talk about the survey experience to non-surveyors and posted a lot of pics:?ÿ http://budgetlightforum.com/node/9580 .?ÿ

(I'm usually very good about updating threads with the results/findings, as I hate searching someone's similar thread just to find they never posted the solution!)?ÿ
