Hi there, Happy New Year and all that. I am a Building Designer, like an Architect but actually an Architectural Draughtsman by trade, and then studied Quantity Surveying/Construction Economics, or for those in the US, Cost Engineering. In my previous residential work to local authorities I would do my own site levels etc, but in more recent times a full land survey by a surveyor was/is required. Now I work as a consultant contractor to the State Fire Service, not like the county or city Fire Departments in the US and elsewhere, interesting work all the same.I have a strong interest in surveying, topo maps and GPS and also in recently time looking at LiDAR and the use of a drone and 3D point cloud imagery, some of this used in the land management and compliance of the sporting facility that I am involved in.

What amazing technology we have now as compared to when I started out as a draughtsman some thirty years ago, on a drawing board with a technical pen and the beginnings of CAD. What does the future hold in surveying technology?? One can only guess, just ask Dick Tracy.
