When you follow someone, you see their activities in your news feed. That way you can follow people that you are most interested in and see where they are posting. It's vaguely similar to the Facebook home page (news feed), where you see the postings of those on your friends list.

To view your news feed, click your name in the top bar, then click "Your News Feed".
