If, instead of putting everything on every page, there were only links to Recent Replies category, Discussion Forums category, etc., and not all the post titles, would that speed it up?
If it did, it would be very minimal. We're working on improving the caching system, which should make a big difference when complete. I needed it to run for awhile with significant traffic before we'd be able to see what's going on.
It may also depend on your connection and your computer/phone. I'm on a 6 year old laptop right now, connected to a mediocre hotel wifi network in the middle of the Pacific and things are loading pretty quickly from here. It was loading pretty quickly for me at home and at the office too, but I realize it won't be the same for everyone. We're working on making it faster.
After some more research and watching the site for a while, I've activated a new caching system known as "Redis Object Caching". Apparently it works well with this platform, but we'll see how it goes. Please let me know if you see any oddities -- after first spotting them and clearing your cache to see if that does the trick. 🙂
Loading much faster for me today!
Yes running much faster now thank you
Folks are starting to grumble about the new site and very slow performance on FB "Life of a Surveyor" page. I have only checked in a couple of times in the past week (checked in many times daily before) and see almost no new posts and very few replies. I sure hope this amazing and often entertaining resource can survive this change. It has survived many others over the years, but this one feels different.
Yeah, it was pretty slow there for a bit while we found our bearings. An entirely new powerful website and a new server needed some time to break in. I wouldn't call it perfect right now, but it's much better than it was even just 48 hours ago.
Anyway, I understand some may hesitate when seeing it. But at the end of the day, you can click on Forums and still participate in just the forums if that's all you want to do. 🙂
It's also going to take some time before traffic levels return to where they were before the move. This is expected, since everyone got logged out and now must find a way to get back logged in again. It may be easy for some that remember their passwords, but others may need to reset them, respond to the notification email (which often goes to spam), etc. Sometimes that process is daunting or irritating, but required to get back in. And, of course, I'm happy to help with that process. https://rpls.com/support/
Anyway, I do hope things return to normal soon and go even beyond that. But I do understand the need for patience to get things ramped up again. The best way to get it rolling again is to actually participate instead of waiting for others to do it. 😉
To further elaborate, I might point out that this is a crowdsourced venue. So, in my opinion, it's kind of interesting for someone to complain about no activity when actually their lack of activity is one significant reason why there's no activity. I'm not saying that to be rude, I'm just saying that that's the reality of a community website that relies on content from its users. Someone has to be willing to post a topic before others can engage in discussion with it.
I do understand the initial hesitation, as I mentioned, since it's an entirely new system. But the forums are still forums and the other features are essentially just additions and/or enhancements to the website.
Please feel free to correct me if you think I'm wrong. I'm always open to other opinions and altering mine if provided with logical feedback. 🙂
AMEN
Well, it's been pretty busy lately... and much faster... 🙃
Ohhhhh man the timeline slider on the right it pretty cool !
Well, my right; your left. 🤣
Ok, This morning the site loads and refreshes very quickly !
Whatever your doing it's working. Feed the hamsters MORE! ! !
Thanks for the feedback, everyone. I had a significant breakthrough on Sunday night, and the site suddenly became quite fast. I appreciate your patience while I/we continue to tweak the site. 🙂
