Nate WOW
When I started running the gun at 13 years old, I found out within the first day what it was. I still think about where I'm going and if I need to tape something before I set a tripod up. 🙂
Nate WOW
I heard from it if I set the tripod leg on the line....
But never the term (Nomenclature) BEER LEG.
Nate
I didn't realize the SurveyorConnect.com domain directed here... (maybe I didn't dig far enough to research). Wendell, I think you've got the bases covered! As for me, here is how I have my old IE favorite stored:
Any time I want to get to the other site, I simply key-in its URL.
Nate WOW
Wow...from me too. I almost made a post about the origin of the term, but I thought it would be for younger surveyors who never chained from the tripod before.
I thought the website name was good, but I didn't disagree with Nate to the extent that it was punishment for screwing up is/was to buy the beers since surveyors would do that every day after work (which was also relatively true when I started surveying).
Lawyers Joke
Well, I don't get the joke, why would I ever want to take Viagra? Please explain. Or would you rather owe me a beer?
Lawyers Joke
The joke implies a lawyer is a [nickname for Richard].
Lawyers Joke
Sorry about the confusion, the joke was aimed at male lawyers.
And yes, if my leg was on line, I would/will buy you a beer:-D
Cheers,
Radar
Nate WOW
Nate, and here I thought that you were an old timey surveyor!!
Back in the day, as an intrumentman down Tenn. way, I was a poor, newly married guy and I tried as hard as possible not to set up a "beer leg." I don't even remember how I knew the phrase but I knew that I couldn't afford beer for the crew!
Regardless, one day it happened and I hd to re-set up the transit (K&E Paragon with still legged tripod and plumb bob), re-shoot the backsight and start again. and Yes, the beer was on me that day...
Lawyers Joke
Silly men, I just wanted to see how you explained on line.
BeerLeg.com isn't going anywhere 🙂
Well, there really hasn't been an "official" announcement of any kind. Only a couple of posts that have since moved down the page. 🙂
I just added a little blurb on the About page.
The "better" name
> I just want to see if we can agree on something that would work any better.
Well, this thread seems to have proven that the "better" name for the site is Beer Leg. But there's nothing wrong with having an alternate, which is already in place, and can be used by those who prefer it.
🙂
The "better" name
I like that this was a discussion, rather than a rant or diatribe. I also like that the second name came about so easily. (Although, on another musing, I would think that www.surveyorconnection.com would have been about 13.347% better) [Note: www.surveyorsconnection.com seems to be a defunct Survey Brokers site]
Oh well... I was just rambling anyway...

Domain grabbed and forwarded. Thanks for the suggestion!

Did you know that 82.67% of statistics are made up on the spot?

No problem... I think you are seeing what I am...

I was about 68.42% sure of that. 😉

Me too. 😉
Nate WOW
I have been surveying since I was 8 (summers), and full time since 1980.
I was so young, that I "got" to carry the inst between PC-PT, and down the Tans, to set the offsets, for PC PT. (subdivision staking) we called them BC EC (Begin Curve, End Curve)
I began running the gun in 1980's but prefered the action end of thing... chopping line etc. We got our 1st EDM in 1981. So, I have learned NOT to set the tripod leg on line..... however, dad never called it a BEER LEG.
I am ok with the name BEER LEG, now that I know it's history.
Nate
Dang Nate.....
So what did you really think my name meant?? I'm hurt.....

LOL!, Beer!, not at you Nate! I'd just never thought about there being surveyors who didn't know what a 'beer leg' was.(that's what learning is all about, seeing things from a different perspective:)) This term IS a part of our common history, and every bit as important as what's new and improved. Knowing some history has hope me a right smart. 🙂
Really enjoyable thread to read.
Take care,
Ed
Dang Nate.....
I knew right away what a beer leg was when I saw this site. It was one of those things you learned right away when you started running the gun in the 60's and 70's. Maybe I'm just negative, but the way I thought it might have been meant was as an impediment to the new rpls site. I mean, a beer leg is something that gets in the way of progress. That and the timing of the beerleg launch at the same time as opening up rpls just gave me that idea. I'm sure the thought process was much more benign.

Nope, I don't think there was ever a beer leg set in the ground that impeded progress. Everything always moved along. Those EDMs still came down the pike just as they were destined to. However, some of them actually did cost the poor overworked long suffering I-man some bucks he could most times ill afford. (we'd sometimes let em slide on the beer if we kinda liked em:))
Far as the thought process behind naming this site, I couldn't imagine it being more benign. Now, the name AND THE TIMING of launching the site was, well I thought anyway, quite clever.
Hey, Wendell, if you ever have a job opening let me know. I have a pretty decent computer and I'm a fairly quick study. Maybe a writer or something. I think I could do this stuff...:>)
Take care,
Ed
