I for one, won't wear a Tee Shirt, that says "Beer Leg". The general conotation, is that you drink ALOT of beer, so much, that everybody thinks you have a hollow leg.
The kids came by, and asked why I am on a site called "Beer Leg". I had to tell them that when RPLS.com went so commercial, so as to become somewhat non user friendly, that everybody congregated at this site, "Just to have a social beer, and chat surveying" and it grew. And grew alot. (Thanks Wendell!)
However, I think it has nearly outgrown it's name, and it will become what RPLS was... (Somehow I think B&P media was tired of managing it....)
So, anyway, what site name would and could you wear (On a tee shirt) ANYWHERE, without negative repercussions?
What Name would give the "Right Message" in your opinion?
I have not really thought of any... busy trying to pay bills. But, I don't think BEER LEG is gonna fly.... on a tee shirt... most of the time.
OK, whata ya want on the site for a name, and whata ya want on YOUR tee shirt.
Now, before ANYBODY criticizes my post, let me add, that IF it stays BEER LEG, it won't offend me... But, I won't be wearing it on a TEE anytime soon.
And, THANK YOU Wendell, for assembling it. And, I realize it is NOT up for a vote. I just want to see if we can agree on something that would work any better.
This post is INTENDED as being helpful, not to criticize. To make the world of surveying better... not to mess anything up.
Nate
I agree that the name could possibly hold the site back from being more than just a social site. In the long run a better name would give it more street cred in the surveying community.
However, I like the format of this site very much, it is like the old RPLS but slicker.
Personally I like "BeerLeg".... It is a social site for us, why not leave it as that?
Same as BL.
Love the site, thanks Wendell.
RPLS is such a joke by comparison.
Since I suggested it, I will start it off:
OK, here is my list, however, it is NOT thoroughly thought through, and is inherently not based on alot of thinking....
OnlineTransit.com (With a transit logo)
oldtheodolite.com (Theodolite logo)
transitandchain.com (with a combination logo, transit and chain on a reel, with a real chain in the background, and an old staff compass)
Totalstation&Deed.com
originalmonument.com
pls.com (With some surveyor tools hanging in the background)
OK, that's enough to kick it off.
Nate
Based on Nate's opposition to "Beer Leg", I guess "Whiskey D_ck" is out of the running 😉
Surveyors at home.
jud
I drink a lot of beer and, in fact, I do have a hollow leg....
BeerLeg.com suits me just fine....
Not that I don't like BeerLeg.......
But how about RADARiscool.com;-)
Or how about The Point of Beginning Message board;-)
Cheers,
Duggie
Talk about too late to the dance.......:-)
I'm with Steve but don't have a hollow leg.
Al
Not really too late to the dance...
I argue that this is only the beginning.....and that this will get bigger.

I vote to keep the name Beer Leg. My age is going to show here, but I assumed the term came from the timeframe before EDMs where if the instrument person set the tripod up such that a leg was on line and interfered with the taping he/she had committed a beer leg and had to buy the first round of beers after work. The beer after work provided a social time to swap survey stories. As a young surveyor I learned a lot about surveying and made friends. So I think the name Beer Leg is perfect.
"whiskey dick"
ok - i peed myself a little on that one jim!!!!!!;;i!!!!!!
don't like the name beer leg and i don't think i would wear a shirt
it is a dated reference
the logo is kinda amateurish too while we are nit picking
i have nothing constructive to add - i am a black and white kinda guy
but i love this site. it is the most visited on my browser list of recent visited site
OK Evelyn
Would you wear the Beer Leg Tee Shirt?
(Around here, we used to have a drunk for a county surveyor, and we still are dealing with the repercussions. CJ used to get his crew taping, and measureing, sit on a stump, pull out a 1/2 gallon of liquor, and procede to get drunk, while the crew did the work. So many folks have told me this identical story, that I have to believe it is true!)
Drunks, who spend the day charging big bucks, sitting in the woods, is not a good concept around here!

> the logo is kinda amateurish too while we are nit picking
I agree. But that's exactly what I was shooting for. With a name like Beer Leg, you certainly don't need a super professional logo...
FOR...
I would say that some years ago that drinking and smoking cigarettes or dipping snuff or chewing tobacco was a pastime that was the social program enjoyed by most everyone, surveyors included.
Not every surveyor that I worked for drank, but most did and a few in excess. A few had multiple crews and only supervised one every now and then to show they were the boss. It never got in the way of their ability to do a good survey and only contributed to their so called local legend status.
It is also true that not everyone did or does to this day.
Beer Leg has my vote FOR.
This is Wendell's parlor and he can call it whatever........I am thankful that he has invited us in.
Nate
Wendell has already addressed this issue for folks who are not thrilled with the "Beer Leg" moniker by providing a more professional url (surveyorconnect.com) pointing to the exact same site with the more professional Title Banner. I am sure that he will also offer logo stuff with the alternate site name as well.

Nate,
No, I probably wouldn't wear the T-shirt. I almost never wear logo T-shirts. And if I do, it would have to be a small logo or on the back, and then it would only be on weekends. Perhaps Wendall could offer those. Misuse of alcohol is in every profession not just surveying. I find the attorney jokes (although I haven't seen any here yet) more offensive than the beer leg name. There's a time and place for everything. I just consider that in this forum I can wear my boots and jeans. In the new rpls, it's more of my jacket and heels.
