It's no wonder people have poor opinions of surveyors. Twice in the last few weeks (and many times before that) someone has asked a general survey question and among the answers were rude comments from members of this forum.

Most recently below from Paul "I hope your kids never need brain surgery."

I understand that we want people to hire us, but it's just down right rediculous to be so rude. Especially considering how many members of the public find their way here.

Maybe if we stop acting like anyone who wants to pick up a tape measure is trying to sabotage our "profession" we'd fair a little better.

Other than that, I'm good!

Slam away!

How about you create a link for that 'rude' comment that you quoted from Paul so we can all read the chain of comments and have some sort of context about the conversation before it goes a-wall in here.

You are good by me.

2 comments in that thread where I thought an apology would be professional but it did not happen.

Paul's reply was crass and came from nowhere since the poster never mentioned any family.

The other by someone who sees himself as a troll alert investigator and even published some links to other internet activity by the poster. I guess he sees himself as some type of self-appointed moderator.

I have read that they are top posters on this site, so you may be correct as to how the public views surveyors.

We need to let new posters or non-surveyor posters explain themselves. The trolls will eventually expose themselves because it is part of the process to eventually confess their behavior.

I hope it doesn't come to this:

Popular Science turning off comments section.

Now, now....

Paul did come back with this:

"I apologize to your child, but will still pray for your family."

He apologized to his imagined child????? But he did pray for the family. A bit left handed maybe.

I agree that some of the frequent posters seem to take on a sense of ownership of the site but that is true on all internet chat sites.

I still think Wendell and Angel do great in keeping a lid on things without making it too bland.

Just my 2 cents...

Ban Anonymous User Names

A lot of the cowards here making derogatory comments will not use their full name as their user name or in their profile. I abbreviate my first name, but my full name is in my profile as well as the means to contact me. This was a huge problem at the former site I was part of also. So-called professinal surveyors taking anonymous shots at others while hiding behind a hidden name.

Very true! Trolls abound.

But the owners allow trolls, and that is their right.
There are more and more groups allowing this practice, and it sucks.

You must be new here

Welcome to the internet. You will not find a place on the internet that doesn't have some kind of troll lurking somewhere waiting to pounce. I'm not calling anyone here a troll by any stretch.

Around here it's like the teachers' lounge at school. When a student or parent or anyone who isn't "one of them" walks in, everyone starts cackling about the outsider. Get the outsider back out there! You can't come in here! Blah blah.

These folks are here trying to solve the world's problems with surveying and really picking each others brains looking for some elusive solution to a problem the general public knows very little about.

Give these hard workers and thinkers a little slack and toughen up, buddy. Around the internets, you'll need a pretty thick skin.

(Now you can take your turn beating me up)

Perhaps if Trolls were prohibited the P&R could come back.

in my memory it was the Trolls that made those discussions objectionable.

My Definition of a Troll in this context: someone who does not sign their real name AND/OR does not provide real world contact information.

Bullies come in all sizes, shapes, religions, ethnicities, etc., etc. Many who point to others as being bullies are pointing out that they, too, are bullies.
