Lost it's domain name on 9/15/2011.

Wendell's attempt at a brother profession site just never caught on. I thought it was a good idea, but alas, no one came to play.

Civil Engineers are about as exciting as Geospatial Professionals:-) .
Maybe less.

Hey now, I resemble that remark. But then again, I guess I am not really that exciting so you are probably correct.

There is no need for a funeral if there are no mourners. There was a need for a core group of maybe 50 engineers to get it started and dedicate some time to posting interesting, challenging or otherwise noteworthy posts every day, while also promoting it to their associates and co-workers. This was not the case.

I'm betting that Wendell has learned a valuable lesson.

Actually

most civil engineers don't have computers. They still use slide rules and draft on onion skin.

I Am An Engineer

I have been a PE for 28 years. Most interaction with other engineers, except for those within the firms I worked for, was in a project review process as either the reviewer ot reviewee. Much too formal.

I have been a PLS for 10 years. Most interaction with other surveyors, except for those within the firms I worked for, was in an information sharing process, maps and otherwise. Much less formal.

For the last 8 years I have devoted much more time to surveying than engineering because I enjoy the work more. The interaction is just a bonus.

Back when I was commenting on the I-35W bridge collapse I saw very little engineering comment out there. I communicated with about a 1/2 dozen engineers and emgineering professors in person, on the phone and via email, but never via a public forum. Besides them I corresponded with some Minneapolis newspaper reporters.

I don't know what brought it up, but the other day my wife was complaining about the bedside manner of some doctors, how they will come in to a patient still feeling the lingering effects of anastesia after surgery, matter of factly tell them they have stage 4 cancer and then leave them alone, confused, and in shock.

I told her that it's because they don't know how to talk to people and don't consider that most other people are humans with such pesky traits as emotions, pride, etc.

In other words, those doctors would have just become engineers if they hadn't been able to afford medical school.
