Can I use a R8 as a receiver and use an external antenna? Maybe a zephyr 2 or tornado? The reason I am asking is because I have a topo that is about 80 acres of 15-20 pine trees. It is not difficult to walk, but we have to cut for every shot. I have a doohickey that mounts a 5/8" thread on top of my 25' level rod. The R8 sways so much when the level rod is up to 25 feet. I am hoping I can put the R8 in a backpack and use a cable to connect to a lightweight antenna. Anyone know if this is possible? If so, any recommendations on the right antenna?

No, not without disassenbling the receiver and tearing it apart. Borrow/rent an R7 with a zephyr 2 antenna, they are pretty lightweight
