They weren't designed for frequent connect/disconnect cycles, and working with them (particularly disconnect) in cramped quarters can be frustrating and painful. They're not elegant, but they're reliable and inexpensive.
I note that Javad uses them on its receiver and UHF radio chargers. They provide a pigtail that has the SAE connector on the charger end and a more user-friendly connector (mini-barrel or Lemo-like [Fischer?]) on the device end.

I've always referred to them as "2 wire flat plugs".
Trailer connections are the "4 wire flat plugs".
