I am using a Topcon GR-5 that seems to have an internal memory issue. Once I turn it off after entering the setting in with the receiver utility I reverts back to defaults. I am attempting to download firmware updates, but Topcon seems to not offer that for free. Any suggestions?

Pauly,

I'm sure there is a problem with the firmware. Sounds like it is working as designed. It is probably your data collection software that is resetting the default parameters each time. Applications such as Pocket3d do this every time to start the base or rover.

What settings are you changing? What sDC software are you usings? Do you have a GR-5 or GR5+

As far as firmware goes. They are available free at http://www.topconpositioning.com&apos ;">www.topconpositioning.com.

  • Navigate to "Enterprise Solutions/Totalcare at top right of main index.
  • You will have to create and sign in with a free user account.
  • Find the TotalCare Box (3rd from Left)
  • Select "GET TO WORK?"
  • Select SUPPORT from top blue bar
  • Under FIRMWARE UPDATES, Select GNSS Firmware v4.7
  • On Right now Select Download
  • You will need to know which GR-5 you are using fro the proper download. GR-5 (w/o VanGuard early model) or GR-5+ (w/ VanGuardl)

Internal memory is most often maintained by a backup battery when not turned on. Find out what and where that battery is and get it replaced. Some units have a user replaceable battery others have it soldered in.

I did the firmware update and it seems to be holding the firmware, however it still is not holding my settings. I am using Survey Pro to start the sessions and Topcon Tools for post processing at the moment. Its an older model GR-5 so I believe it doesn't have the Vanguard tech. I think its a HUB battery issue.

Thank you

I have never heard of any internal battery in a GR-5 going bad.

What settings are you talking about? Is it the epoch rate for logging static data?

Are you using TRU or Survey Pro to set the epoch storage rate?

If you set the epoch rate with TRU, then connect to the receiver with Survey Pro, the settings will go back to default (1 second epoch rate). As Survey Pro is resetting it. Try using Survey Pro to set the epoch rate, and a start the static logs. This way settings will be saved in Survey Pro.

Got the receiver repaired. It was an internal memory issue.
