Dear colleagues

In Geodesy, what is the use of the ITRF (International Terrestrial Reference Frame)?

For example: if we use the IGS stations to monitoring the ionosphere

Thank you?ÿ

It would take too long for me to type up an answer for you. Look at the following 2 places to get started.

?ÿ

itrf.ensg.ign.fr?ÿ and do a search in Wikipedia for?ÿITRF

It is my understanding that NAD2022 will, essentially, be equivalent to the latest ITRF realization. ITRF is supposed to be the current best expression of the earth, while NAD 83 is restrained by parameters determined in the 1970's. So, I guess the use of ITRF is scientific. Although many countries outside of North America use one of its realizations as a basis for its coordinate system.

As a geodesist, I'd expect this is something you would answer, not ask. So is this a trick question?

The poster's profile says he is in Algeria, so US-centric answers about NAD83 and 2022 aren't going to help much.

The table here would indicate that Algeria's datums are on Clarke 1880 ellipsoid, so ITRF would have some significant differences.

This might be relevant, also

I thought we already had a "geodesist' on this board?

@paul-in-pa   You have more than one.  One of them was the first responder.

In addition to the links offered by John Nolton and Bill 93, I suggest the following:

https://www.iers.org/IERS/EN/Publications/TechnicalNotes/TechnicalNotes.html;jsessionid=E8AC15B14478FC926A6BBDD9F14B4091.live1

On the specific issue of the utility of the ITRF, remember that to accurately monitor and quantify something you do so with respect to the best framework possible. That is the current version of the ITRF. The best quality positioning requires the use of orbit data produced in the ITRF/IGS.

Bill93 notes that the Algerian datum is based on Clarke 1880 ellipsoid. Like Clarke 1866 used in NAD27 (for North America) is NOT geocentric.?ÿ

As for who are geodesists, I found the following UNAVCO YouTube post amusing:

https://www.unavco.org/highlights/2015/ geodesists.html

?ÿ

I recollect a conversation with a colleague lamenting that to the traditional branches of geometric and geophysical geodesy, he had been promoted to be a ƒ??political geodesist.ƒ??ÿ
