Long story short, I came across a deal I couldn't pass up on a demo Topcon Tesla. It's the Geo 3G, so it has GPS, 3G modem, camera and Bluetooth. All of my surveying up to this point has been with a total station and data collector. Generally Topon total stations and data collectors running survey pro.
My question is this, what would I need in order to have a working GPS system. I've rented a leica gs14 a few times. It connects to a local base station. I basically have the gs14 atop the pole and a data collector and I can go from there. I turn it on, connect to the local base station and I'm up and running.
With the Tesla I would like to subscribe to the local base station and have the same setup. I guess I'm wondering what receiver would be compatible with the tesla and give similar results as the leica GS14. All property line work would still be done with the total station. This would be used more for asbuilts and non-critical layout. The ability to penetrate a canopy would be great. I heard something about a newer band at a lower frequency that may help. I'd like the ability to upgrade to that or get it now if available.
Please forgive me for being a complete dummy about GPS. I've been doing this for about 18 years and skipped the school part of it. I've basically learned on the equipment available to me, so now it's time to learn some new stuff.
I appreciate any and all advice and hopefully I can contribute some in the future.
Karl
What survey field software is on the Tesla?
If it is Topcons Magnet, then it will only work with Sokkia and Topcon GPS receivers. To use the Tesla with Leica GPS, you will need Carlson SurvCE on the Tesla.
The GPS in the Tesla in only L1, your cell phone is more accurate.
Thanks for the reply. I should have said that the Magnet Field software is not active, so that is another consideration to be made. I have used Survey Pro for a while, so I honestly have no opinion on Magnet Field or survce. I am wondering what is comparable to the leica GS14 while being compatible with the Tesla. Would survce give me more options, such as working with my existing Topcon total stations, possibly a Topcon receiver or even another brand such as leica. I would assume Magnet Field is Topcon only or Topcon and sokkia.

Not sure about the L1. Based on the Tesla Brochure I see some different info. I still would need an external receiver, but what does this mean. See attached photo.
It appears that's a newer model. My mistake.
If your wanting a Network-only rover I would suggest the HiperSR. Ive been using one for the past year and had good results. It's compact, light, no external antenna to get caught on limbs and vines, and the internal battery will give you 2 days of work before needing a charge. However, if your looking to possibly get a base/rover setup down the road I would go on and get the HiperV due to the fact the SR uses a longlength Bluetooth radio and only compatible with another SR(900 ft range). You might have to get MAGNET software installed on the tesla but I don't know that for sure.
Network only rover should be fine. Could you possibly give me a link to what you have. When I look it up, I seem to find a wide variety of prices and descriptions, but they all say hiper sr. Sorry that I'm this confused. What's a good price for that unit?

Don't hold me to the price but I think you can get one new in the 8-10k range.
The Tesla has a L1 WAAS enabled GPS unit inside.

There are many varieties of the HiPer SR- I would suggest you contact your local Topcon Dealer and have them configure one for your needs and give you a demo-
