Dan Robison and I are planning to do observations on a couple of benchmarks that I have classified as "low hanging fruit" on 26 March 2016. Is anyone else going to participate? NGS is trying to organize a cross continent observation on Wednesday from 11:00 Central till 16:00. I plan to be observing then also.

The benchmarks that Dan and I plan to observe on are in a park and we can drive to within 100 feet of the furthest one. We will bring lawn chairs and refreshments and have a productive 4 1/2 hours.

Steve,
If it doesn't rain, I'll bring a 100' Nubian tape and we can have a 'throwing' contest/demonstration...

Two other fellows in Central Arkansas will be observing during National Surveyors' Week.

Maybe @Nate The Surveyor will join in with his Javad on PID EJ1513. I think his family would enjoy the outing to the 'Jot em Down Store'...Lum, Abner, Nate, and Big Help...

Dan, what's the date?
What's the objective?
I'm willing.
But, I'm looking to see what good it does... Ie, with coors, and all.

Obtaining reliable orthometric heights from GNSS observations depends on having a good geoid model available. Model errors = elevation errors. The GPS on benchmarks program is designed to improve the model so that you can get good ortho heights from your CORS ties.

Ok, that's what I thought... But this means that to be useful, it needs to be on a pre existing ngs bench Mark.
I feel one closer to Caddo gap, on the river would do more good... I think we are in a void here.

Nate,
Take a look at this link:
http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/GPSonBM/

You can also set up an exhibit on your tailgate...time to celebrate National Surveyors Week...meet and market the public.

Contact the local news folks, etc

Nate,
Look at the data sheet for PID EJ1513. It meets the criteria plus it is at a tourist attraction.

There's a list somewhere of priority bench marks, but I wasn't able to find it just now. Anyone have a link?

P.S. to John Nolton: even NOAA isn't consistent in its formatting of "bench marks" / "benchmarks." See this page for an example of the one-word version.

NGS link shortcut:
http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/ds_mark.prl?PidBox=EJ1509

It's overdue for a recovery report, anyway. Be sure to check out the damage discussed in the GC logs and see if you think the elevation is unchanged.

Geocaching Page has some hits from 2007 as Bill eluded too. I love checking this site as part of research. Many times the geocaching folks have nice pictures and recent updates together with recent coordinates.

Are the RINEX files publicly available after the event?
If yes, then you could set up your own BM in your backyard & post process this with other RINEX files from BMs.
You would then get X,Y & Z (in MSL or whatever datum the BMs are recorded).

I did this in the past when office was in a low season. 5 GPS receivers - 2 on official GPS CP; 2 on official BM; 1 on office roof deck recording @1 second for ~ 5-6 hours.

The Maryland Society of Surveyors is participating on March 23rd.

I have 9 confirmed observation participants for that day, on 1st or 2nd order NGS Bench Marks. I have 20 tentative observations on NON-NGS concrete monuments to add to our Maryland OPUS-Project, during March. I erected a mast on a bolt I set in a rock out-cropping, and plan on collecting data all of March for incorporation into the OPUS-Project.

Also created KMZ files of the marks NGS prioritized in 2014: click here.

Ddsm, I know where one is, in glenwood, on the old RR trestle. It's a stainless steel rod in the bridge abutment. On the south east end of it, on the west side of the Caddo River.
Knowing that Glenwood, is on the Caddo River, and that flood issues are gaining momentum here, and that the drain base for this Caddo River are coming through here, I feel that this one would have greater impact, in the area of need. Would you mind checking to see if this one qualifies, by way of criteria, ie, first order, or second, etc? I've used this one for a local elev. before.
I think this one has greater need.
However, I'll plan to do this one, or another, if you like.
Pick me one. If you figure that geometricly, Pine Ridge would do more good, I can do it.

Thanks Steve and Dan.

@Nate The Surveyor,
If the mark you are referring to is PID EJ1371, it is VERT ORDER - SECOND CLASS 0 and has SCALED horizontal position. I note that it is a MONEL METAL RIVET and not a "stainless steel rod".

Try out http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/datasheet.prl . It is very easy to navigate.

That s the one.
I'm going from memory.
Been a few yrs since I visited it.
Would that be a good one?
What's your opinion?
I've never done it.

Nate,

I think it would be fine as far as GPS on Benchmarks go. (You might want to contact Charlie Tucker before you go traipsing around on the tracks). You could set up your National Survey Week display in the park and POINT up to the GPS at the trestle. (Do not encourage the public to encroach the railroad right of way.)

Set up your total station, transits, compass', etc. for a show and tell. Print out a FIRM of Glenwood...a USGS Quad...a copy of your plat of the old Lumber Mill...ADVERTISE...

...and don't forget the unicycles...

That issue is moot. Tracks are closed, and taken up, and sold for scrap metal.
That monel rivet is shiney, and visable.
