Is anyone currently running geomax gps with Carlson survpc? I'm considering purchasing a used zenith 40 base/rover to use with the latest version of survpc but my concern is future updates to survpc may not support this hardware. I've noticed the latest version of survpc doesnt support their latest model (zenith 60), so it seems as though they are moving away from supporting geomax gps. I also just don't have any experience with geomax gps units, so I'm not sure how they perform. It seems most geomax products encourage you to use xpad but I've used Carlson for many years and I'm not willing to change at this point. Eventually I will purchase Carlson brx7s, but I was hoping to save a little $$ starting out. Any insight will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
I would have thought the Zenith40 would be similar cost to BRX7?? I've been running base/rover RTK Zenith40s with XPAD since 2019. Great when working but a few niggles along the way. However in past year started having intermittent radio or software issues; would lose fixed solution at same time as latency went up so appears a comms problem or how firmware dealt with gaps in transmission. Dealer couldn't work it out so replaced them with Zenith60s which dealer hasn't got set up properly yet so have pair of Zenith16s on loan which work similar to Zenith40s.
I would not want to be running the Zenith40s with SurvPC given enough hassles with their own software. You are much better using hardware and software made specifically for each other (and hopefully tested extensively together before released for sale; not sure modern software development works that anymore though given recent example on here about Leica firmware problem).
Good reason why Leica/Trimble etc make you buy a package. All tested together to work together plus you only want one dealer/manufacturer to point finger at if it stops.
In short don't do that too yourself. From what I can see the BRX7 is well regarded and will fit better with SurvPC. I prefer Leica to Trimble and if I'd known my business was going to be at good as it has been since I'd started up I would have bought a set of Leica gear. The top shelf gear is just more reliable/less buggy and I don't have a high tolerance for frustrating equipment.
