Not 100% sure about the category choice here, but anyway.....I got a quote on the Geomax Zenith 25 Pro. It's coming in lower than the Spectra Ashtech units, and appears to be more in line with the Leica GS series (which I feel is better equipment anyway).

I'm looking at this unit because I currently run a Leica TCRP 1203+ with a Carlson Surveyor+ and Carlson software. The Leica stuff won't work with this setup or so I've been told.

Anyway, does anyone run this unit with this collector? The salesman from Geomax seems pretty knowledgable and was able to answer my technical questions about configuring this as a network rover with a SIM card, etc.

I've survived a year doing layout for these guys with no GPS except for bringing my old Trimble 5700 in for static observations a few times. I'm really hoping to get some good feedback about the zenith because we just picked up a MASSIVE site work job and this could probably save me hundreds of hours if it works right.

I just bought one. Used it on a survey for the first time today.

I got a base, rover, and Getac 336E data collector for under $15,000. I found them at akashy surveys for that price but went to Allen Precision where they price matched the Akashy place. I had been dealing with Allen Precision already so that is why I went with them and not Akashy.

I used our TS and GPS today to shoot in the same points. All but two were under canopy and the results were pretty good. About .03' different on average though I did have one different by .2' and one completely out of whack by 3.5 feet. But this was under canopy, in a hollow by a steep hillside and I only took one observation per point just to see how it was going to do. I figure if I take several I can catch those few bad shots I'm getting. So far I like it but have more playing around with it to do. I really like the Getac. The software won't let you store a shot unless it is certain it's getting good results. However I still had one out by 3.5 feet. So it's not fool proof.

Welcome to GNSS positioning!

I don't run this combo but I can attest to the fact that Carlson runs a Zenith 20 without problem.

If that doesn't bring Kent back, nothing will.

Kent IS back!

The ability to post a comment to a post [like this] is what did it.

I would've loved to have @Kent McMillan at our RTN workshop a couple weeks ago: 150 participants; 4 TOP network administrators; 4 vendors: Topcon, Leica, Trimble and Carlson. For a day and a half of training.

It was awesome! Gavin set 7 hubs in a marginal open space and did 5 hour observations about 3 weeks prior; Larry compiled the data and ran it through Opus to verify the results. 30-40 people brought their own gear and EVERYONE learned how to achieve excellent results.

I used my 10 year old Leica gear; worst horizontal was 0.02' vertical was 0.12'.

there were a few skeptics and lots of good questions; everyone walked away with a better understanding of the technology.

Doug
