A few random thoughts..
The precision displayed on a data collector is consistently overly optimistic by a factor of roughly 2.5. I have observed this on every major brand I've used. Not the end of the world, unless you actually believe you are cracking hundredths with basic RTK.
RTK observations will not significantly improve after about 20 seconds. The math used to compute the fake number on the screen is an abuse of random error theory. You are better off doing two short observations with forced change in conditions than one long observation. Swap sattelite groups, rotate the pole 180, recenter the tip on the mark.
Real time networks have come a long way in recent years. Used properly they can achieve results nominally equal to base/rover. I still see obvious abuses resulting in feet of error. The tool is not at fault. That being said I have never seen RTN exceed the quality of base/rover RTK.
@hi-staker You get it. ?ÿI have not heard the term ??Dump it? in years lol. We use to physically turn receiver upside down in mid and late 90??s to make it lose lock. Now most can be done with a push of a button or tapping the screen. ?ÿWe also back in the mid to late 90??s could hold our hand over top of antenna. ?ÿI tried that the other day with a newer unit and she was still tracking sats. Or based on your wording you have probably just changed elevation mask to make it lose lock as well. Then place it back to 15 or 10 degrees. ?ÿTo bad you are on the other side of your he USA. Your line of thinking would make my life much easier. ?ÿI am still trying to prove rtk works here for more than some starting control.?ÿ
@field-dog 15 minute separations is allows more than enough time for the satellite geometry to change. It is what USFS specifies in our contracts, so we just use it on all our boundary ties.
@olemanriver We still physically turn the receiver upside down. LOL
TIe-dump-tie is our mantra for all boundary or control ties.?ÿ
@hi-staker say it aint so joe say it aint so lol. Are you running a TSC1 and Trimble 4800 also. ?ÿLol. Well if it works. ?ÿI know my dad still spits on his plastic worms when he goes fishing. I can??t knock him because he still catches more bass than i do. I would fit right in with yall. Except my southern accent would take a bit to get use to. ?ÿI am assuming you??re out west. ?ÿ
We're running iGage iG8 receivers with Carlson SurvCE. Physically turning the receiver upside down shows lock is lost on the data collector and Mark Silver has told us that "dumping" the receiver is enough to cause it to lose lock.?ÿ I have tied corners years later and have matched our original ties within a few hundredths. I'm confident in our procedures, otherwise I wouldn't stamp the survey! ?????ÿ
We sure go through a lot of exercises to place our two bit rebar subject to surface motion and other external forces.?ÿ
