I am shopping around for a deal on a used robotic total station. I have a Topcon 8203, thinking of upgrading to a Leica 1200 series or a Trimble S6.
My Trimble dealer had a list of "lightly used" gear. I bought a few S6's that way...still get the warranty and save some money.
BTW, those are the two best Robots (Leica 1200 or Trimble S6)...just bought our third S6 last week. You might want to look at the multi-track prism if you opt for the Trimble. Good Luck.
Leica has replaced the 1200 series, and have some good deals on the TCRP1202+ R400 units. I thik they have some 1203 and 1205 models. We just ordered a TCRP1202+ R400 and all the bells and whistles. The bells and shistles cost more than the Total Station.
I'll second the opinion to use a Multi-track with the S-6. I'd sell you mine if I didn't love it so much. Unless you need to take pictures through the gun or scan with it, the S-6 can't be beat.
I will definitely look into the multi-track, thanks for the advice. I don't have any experience with Trimble - just know that most people seem to be pretty happy with them. Although I was just reading the post about the data collector screen issue - guy thinks he's going to have to buy new software because his DC went on the fritz. That sounds like a ripoff.
I do have some Leica experience. Faster and less hassle than the Topcon. Not crazy about the Smartworx software but I can use it if I have to. I think you can use Carlson with a Leica 1200 series gun but I'm not 100% sure.
I'll be using this total station for construction, lots of form work and also underground utilities and pretty much everything else. Would like to be able to get on my hands and knees and use it.
If I was doing lot surveys and topos I would probably be content to stick with my Topcon.
We had the option of using Carson or Leica Smartworx for the data collector. We opted for the Leica Data Collector. You have to decide which DC you are using when you purchase the Radio Handle. So far the Smartworx DC is working out fine.
Let me know if you decide to sell your Topcon.
I have 3 825 robots and an AP-L1A for sale. All in good shape and very reasonable if you are interested. My e-mail is good in my profile.
just a comment that I've had a 1200 for about 3 years w/smartworx. At first I found the software to be confusing, but the more I use it the more I understand that it is just very intelligent software. The more I've learned to understand it, the more I've learned to appreciate its capabilities.
Anyways, I'm a very happy user of the 1200 w/smartworx and would give a thumbs up to anyone considering it.
Steve
We are the same way. Havent even thought about switching back to Carlson with the new Leica collector and VIVA Smartworx. Our 1200 robots are our everyday work horses, but I am placing an order for the TS30 within the next month. Have a few layout jobs that require the 0.5" accuracy, however the speed of the robot is what I cant believe.

The T'S 30 is fast, but none of us can outrun the 1200. We decided to standardize on the 1200 instruments with a Viva CS15 Datacollectot running Viva Smartwrox. It is a big improvement from the SetII B and a TDS 48 that we were using for routine work. Now I just have to get rid of the junk that doesn't work anymore.
I agree that you cant outrun the 1200, and we also switched all crews over to the CS15 which has made everything standardized. Plus now we have one collector that runs all of our GPS and TPS.
We have been renting a TS15 robot for the past month on another project, and I think it is about 25% faster than the 1200 and we will probably eventually replace our 1200 fleet with these since they have the imaging in them.
So far no sale offers. Still looking.
I have perfect condition S6 and R8GNSS system
I have an S6 that is my personal unit that I use on forensic engineering projects. It gets used only about 25 to 50 hrs a year. It is show room quality.
With it comes all the attachments, including pole, prism, TSC2 with TDS Survey Pro Max. If you are interested give me a call. Price would be in the 20's.
This instrument is in tip top shape.
I also have two R8GNSS gps units with internal radios that are also my personal instruments used on my forensic work mostly, and some limited boundary survey work. They are near show room quality. They get used about 20 times a year. They also have a TSC2 with Survey Pro Max and also Survey Controller. Pole, tribrach, etc. batteries, chargers, etc. all included.
These instruments have not been abused and have been taken care of.
TGO included.
Let me know if you are interested.
