What's the best way to identify an antique piece of equipment? My father has an old K&E transit level we'd like to find information on, such as the year of manufacture, possibly the value. We have the model number, but that's about it. We've found similar equipment online, but nothing close enough to say, "Yep, that's it!" Any advice or information is appreciated.

antique instrument

A worthwhile place to start is the Virtual Museum of Surveying www.surveyhistory.org, click on Museum in the left sidebar, and then go to the How Old Is My ...? link. That should give you some serial number-date of manufacture information. The only way I know to determine the value is to put it out there and see what's offered. It's a volatile market, especially now. Good luck!
