The emblem at the top of the book is the official seal of the Army Corps of Engineers. (The castle is the insignia, not the seal.) I have a small Corps seal (in cloissone) that I use as a tie tack on occasion; most people have no idea what it represents.

When you closely examine the seal, you will find a small shield with stripes and stars and the letters "T.E." in Old English. That stands for the original group:

THE TOPOGRAPHIC ENGINEERS

That's the revolutionary war engineers that helped win our independence. They later changed it over to the Civil Engineers ...
