Unfortunately, this doesn't surprise me. I once had four engineering students approach me on a job to ask a few questions. We were happy to explain what we were doing and we let them take a few shots with the total station. They seemed completely lost by what we told them (which was pretty basic) and said they had not learned anything like that in class.
I'm sure their instructor would say the class is just to give them a basic idea of the principles of surveying and what the instruments are used for, but it seems like it would be just as easy to teach them proper use of the equipment. What if some of their students actually intended to be surveyors?
