So there is no reason for someone to get licensed here if they need to "helicopter" in for a project. I'm sure Tommy is frustrated that he put in all that time and effort and never did any billable work here. But that's not Florida's fault.
If I wanted to work in Georgia, I wouldn't expect them to change their rules for me.

I'm not wanting the rules changed for me specifically. I'm wanting the rules changed so that those surveyors that make a good faith effort to get themselves educated are recognized as such. Can you honestly defend a rule that doesn't give credit for a course given by the NGS, but gives credit to someone that gives a course on the material from the NGS? Come on man. That's crazy. That's like telling someone, I want to know your wife's opinion, but I'm not going to get it from her, I'm going ask her best friend what it is, because I'm sure she told her.

Tommy, No, I'm not saying I agree with the rules as you have encountered them. But, I also don't have the time or inclination to fight to change them. It's a hoop to jump through. It's your choice/

I agree, and I did not realize the rules were as onerous as they are.

Just another example of having to satisfy not the intent of a rule, but the checklist provided to a pencil-pusher.

And every two years new members are appointed to the board in Florida. And these new members want to put their 'stamp' on the rules and put forth changes that they think are needed. So there are new rules and new hoops to jump through. And then in two years it starts all over again...

I received this link in an email from National Ocean Service, NOAA just this morning
https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/USNOAANOS/bulletins/189682e
As a public service I figure this series should be automatically vetted by those States that require CEUs.
as a consumer I can't jump the hoops to get NOA approved... but

there is a lot of high quality stuff out there, recorded webinars that I can view at my leisure...
I figure it all goes back to the definition of education.

Been there and done that. They, the DOACS, apparently won't appoint a licensed individual to the board unless they are a state society member. I have talked with others who have applied and are not society members and they have been rejected as well. I have filed information requests with the DOACS on their board appointment process but they will not provide any information. Since the board is basically the mouth piece of the state society it makes sense that they want to control who is on the board.

"NGS plans to replace the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD 83) and the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88) in 2022."

Cripes, can't wait to see how FEMA handles this, 😮

I am not licensed in Florida and don't want to be. I have been licensed in 3 States for 30 years. I just got licensed in my 4th state in December. I have been audited for continuing education in bot of the non resident states. When I got the audit notice from the first state, I pitched it in the trash. They wasted $8 sending me a registered letter that they could have handled with a 1st class letter. About a month before the deadline, I got the second notice from them by 1st class mail. This is a state where the legislature found out that the board had a big war chest tucked away and took it all for the general fund leaving them without enough funds to mail out the little pocket cards as receipt of our renewal. I did make it point to read their rules and had my bases covered.

I then shipped my box of documentation to them with a list of 240 contact hours for continuing education and a letter explaining how each of those sessions met or exceeded their requirements. They did not require preapproval, and a request that they return the material to me after they we through incase I needed to for other states.

Fast forward 12 Months and I got a similar notice from the other non resident state. This is a 2 year state that requires 20 hours every 2 years. I took the same box that I used for the first state and added documentation for another 60 hours and shipped it to them. A few weeks later, I got my box and a letter from them stating that they found enough credit in my submittal but that they didn't like some of the classes I took. Translation, none of this material was given by the state society and we don't like that. They have an annual ethics requirement of 1 hour and I turned in probably 20 hours of ethics training. Several of the courses I took granted University Credit and they have a conversion for that. They never really explained exactly which classes they didn't like but I could guess.

Now fast forward 20 years and I get a letter from the second state again. I drug my feet until the last minute and sent in my 120 hours. They didn't even bother telling me they did not like some of it this time because I had their state society conference. The big problem was that they wanted me to stamp or seal one of forms. I had to scrounge around and purchase a stamp pad so I could stamp their form. I have never signed a plat in on other state than the one where I reside but I have to keep up with 3 seals and a rubber stamp. My stamp is old and dried out and needs to be replaced. Maybe in another 20 years, I will just buy a seal for that state.

When I retire, I may just become a CEU provider and provide LOW cost CEU. Pick out a fun place I want to go and arrange a class. We could probably cure all the surveying problems with 2 cases of beer and 20# of burgers at a picnic area with a white board to draw on. One of the best CEU programs I ever attended was taught at a Picnic Shelter in a city park. Everyone brought their own food and drinks and we cured a lot of problems.

Steve,
I've always enjoyed the PALS picnics and training sessions. I look forward to the next scheduled event during National Surveyors Week and the GPS on Benchmarks Picnic.
