Don't Be Wasting Your Time Reading Foolish Posts......

don't be wasting your money and time on a college education
by Steve Corley, Little Rock, Arkansas, Tuesday, August 31, 2010, 05:58 (4 hours, 35 minutes ago) @ Mike Falk
We recently advertised for a Rod-man/Instrument-man, and had 111 applicants from all over the country. Of the group that HR sent to me for review, only 1 was not an LS.

...111 APPS FOR A ROD/INST MAN POSITION THAT PAYS 12-15 BUCKS AN HR TOPS--110 OF THEM LS'S...

Sure college isn't for everyone, neither is Voc School... takes all kinds.

I agree with this too. One of the things that we don't seem to do well here in the U.S. that is probably handled better in other industrialized countries is the sorting process for students to go one direction or another.

It's pretty foolish to look around in these economic times, probably the worst since the depression, and relate the lack of available jobs to level of education, but actually college educated workers have done slightly better over the last few years.
I think the biggest problem we're going to face over the next decade is the fact that most manufacturing jobs lost during the last decade are never coming back, and there's only so many low-paying service jobs out there.

I remember reading that the Chinese government recently directed their educational system to produce 10,000 solar engineers over a period of less than a decade. Now, foolish as the Chinese are with their government interference into their solar industry, we'll probably end up buying our solar technology from them in a few years.

EDUMICATION IS NOT WHAT ITS CRACKED UP TO BE--WITH A POOR ECONOMY SCHEDULED TO BE AROUND FOR ABOUT 15 MORE YRS --DON'T PISS AWAY YOUR FUTURE IN A DEAD FIELD, DON'T GO TO AN OVERPRICED COLLEGE AND TAKE GOVT MONEY TO USE DOING YOUR LAUNDRY, BUYING HO-HOS, PUTTING GAS IN YOUR CAR, ETC IF YOU GUYS LISTEN TO THE GUY ON THE RADIO HELPING THOSE WITH GETTING OUT OF DEBT==MOST OF WHICH IS GOVT EDUCATION LOANS--AND MOST ARE WORKING IN PISSANT FIELDS BECAUSE THATS ALL THEY CAN GET==THATS ALL THEY WILL EVER GET--PEOPLE NEED TO GET INTO VOCATIONS AS MANY AS POSSIBLE--GET MONEY, LEARN HOW MONEY WORKS AND PUT IT TO WORK-MOST NAY SAYERS TO MY POST ARE SCRATCHING THEIR ASSES WAITING FOR THE PHONE TO RING--GUESS WHAT IT AIN'T GONNA BE RINGING--SURVEYING IS NOT A COLLEGE ORIENTED VOCATION--ITS A HANDS ON VOCATION SUPPLEMENTED BY COURSES DESIGNED TO FURTHER ONES REALM THAT NORMALLY WOULD NOT BE AVAILABLE ON A DAY TO DAY APPRENTICESHIP.. MOST MAKE MORE OF SURVEYING THAN IT REALLY IS--ITS MOSTLY COMMON SENSE SUPPLEMENTED BY THE ACQUIRED SKILLS AND THE DEGREE AT WHICH EACH PARTICIPANT MASTERS THEM--THATS WHY THERE ARE SO MANY SURVEYORS THAT COULDN'T MAKE A BUCK IF YOU SPOTTED THEM THE FIRST 99 CENTS--THEN THERES OTHERS THAT CAN DO IT IN THEIR SLEEP AND ARE DONE BEFORE MOST EVEN GET STARTED--I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN IN THE SECOND GROUP, DID I SEEK EDUCATION--DAMN RIGHT I DID, HUNDREDS OF HOURS MAYBE THOUSANDS, DON'T KNOW FOR SURE IF THEY MADE ME A BETTER SURVEYOR.. MY BEST REFLECTION ON LEARNING ARE THE EMPLOYERS AND EMPLOYEES I HAVE WORKED FOR AND WITH OVER 42 PLUS YEARS, ITS FROM THEM I ACQUIRED MOST OF MY SKILL. LEARNING TO PUT INTO PRACTICE WHAT THEY TAUGHT ME MOST OF WHICH IS NOT IN ANY BOOK OR CURRICULUM--SURVEYING WILL BE HARMED WHEN ALL WHO ENTER MUST HAVE A SHEEPSKIN TO PARTAKE IN THE FUN I HAVE ENJOYED IN MY LIFETIME--

IN THE WORDS OF A GREAT AMERICAN--"I PITY THE FOOL !" TDD

"We've allowed the education establishment to convince us everyone has to go to college which is a mistake."

Yes we are just dupes we all know that what we really need is More ignorant stupid people.

Dave you say some dumb things from time to time but this really takes the cake....
Even if you are going to be a farm worker for the rest of your life , I have not idea why anyone,in there right mind, would suggest that the enrichment that comes from a higher education is a waste of time......
You are kidding right? Are you suggesting that a ditch digger cannot and should not gain the benefits of higher education simply because there is no economic return that can be associated with digging ditches and higher education.....?
You are not really making such a suggestion are you....?
We all benefit from an educated society whether or not the eduvation is used as a basis for a career.....
Some people live in mud huts and have never seen a book much less a college and I doubt any serious person would suggest that is a norm we ought to aspire to....

My advice is for young people to get as much education as they can when the opportunity presents itself and to continue on a path of life long learning otherwise the Dave Karoly's of the world are going to wind up being your boss....
Dave lol....

So Dane you think everyone should go to college?

Everyone?

No other country on earth has this attitude.

I guess when you see the obvious which goes against the conventional wisdom or ignites people's fears then some doof who can't think says you are dumb.

Have you ever heard of "educated idiots"?

How many Engineers full of high falutin calculus did I have to explain "water flows downhill"? I'm not kidding. I never once saw a street widening plan done correctly when I was an inspector.

> --DON'T PISS AWAY YOUR FUTURE IN A DEAD FIELD-- TDD

statement sufficed here. Avoid surveying like the plague - if you choose college, choose wisely (look to medical). Otherwise, vocational opportunities certainly abound.

@ Dave: "How many Engineers full of high falutin calculus did I have to explain "water flows downhill"? I'm not kidding. I never once saw a street widening plan done correctly when I was an inspector."

So the converse must be true? Lack of higher education makes for top-notch surveyor / engineer? How many civil engineering plans ever get done completely 'to plan'? I do get it, I've had civil EITS not even know what a section corner is...but being full of high falutin calculus myself, I've never had to have someone explain to me water flows downhill...:-/

BUTCH, I SEE YOU ALSO CAN READ THE WRITING ON THE WALL

TOO BAD MOST HERE DON'T SEE THE DISTRUCTION OF WHAT WAS A GREAT VOCATION.. SURVEYORS IN HISTORY WERE THINKERS AS WELL AS DO'ERS, NOT SO TODAY, THEY ARE JUST ANOTHER SHEEP IN THE HERD---MOST WORK I SEE WHETHER ENGINEERING OR SURVEYING IS CRAP, THE SCIENCE OF THOSE PROFESSIONS IS GONE, THE FLAIR OF A DRAFTSMAN THE SOLID THOUGHT OF A GOOD ENGINEER, THE GOSPEL PLAT OF A GOOD SURVEYOR PERFECT IN THOUGHT AND CONTENT HAS BEEN LOST--MOMMA DON'T LET YOUR BABIES GROW UP TO BE SURVEYORS !! IF YOU DO THEY WILL SPEND THEIR MONEY ON POOR EDUCATION, SPEND HALF THEIR LIFE IN AN UNEMPLOYMENT LINE AND ALWAYS BE SUCKING ON THE HIND TEAT OF THE ENGINEERING PIG--TDD

don't be wasting your money and time on a college educationd

Dane,

One can get an education without paying a school an obscene amount of money. Or are you seriously saying that you think it is a smart idea for a person to go in debt hundreds of thousands of dollars for a job making 25 thou a year? That is a recipe for modern day slavery!

The sad part is that my sarcasm above is not too far from the mark. Before long in this country one will need a BS or a BA to flip burgers. Companies use a checklist; no college degree, they will not even look at you because the h.r. people are too incompetent to actually judge the ability of their prospective employees. This one has a degree, he must be smart; this one does not have a degree, he must be dumb. And then they wonder why the square peg they hired does not work in the round hole they were trying to fill. Maybe because they did not offer the best person the job?
