Paul T. O'Hargan

Florida MTS in Altamonte Springs back in the 90s.

It was one of those "light bulb goes on" moments.

Also, a Florida MTS I attended back in 1999 or 2000 in Miami Lakes.

An excellent course.

Also, way back when, in the early 80's, a course on Evidence and Procedures in Boundary Location, with Don Wilson and Walt Robillard in Worcester MA. This was just after the book had been published, and there were some lively discussions.

I liked Dennis Mouland. Heard him twice.

He brought a lot of experience and you could sense his passion for surveying.

also kind of a no BS kind of guy, IMO

The one that stands out to me is "Deeds, Descriptions, and the Law" by Gary Kent. I liked his common-sense approach to real-world situations, and most of all, I appreciated that he was well-versed in California Law, which I find is rare in seminars given by national speakers.

Also, the NJ Conference has a mock hearing of the State Board, where they walk you through what will be asked, what will be expected, with specific examples of what to do and what NOT to do.

From the "do I need a lawyer" phase all the way up to possible penalties and fines, they really give a great feeling for how things will unfold.

I was the "defendan"t in a mock trial seminar a few years ago in Baton Rouge with the same scenario that you describe.
It was rushed but fun.
Really can not say if it was good or not but a few people came up afterward and gave compliments. One was a member of the BOR at that time of the real hearing, he told me that I had uncannily nailed the character.
I told him to see if he could get me an audition for Law and Order.
🙂

One of the more memorable ones for me was givin by Rudy Mancke...a Naturalist. The theme was not so much survey related, but gave great insight as to what a land surveyor might encounter in the field...things that bite, itch, sting or just ruin an otherwise injoyable day. The classroom was packed...:-)

The five day, in-depth workshop/seminar on water boundaries.
"RIVER AND LAKE BOUNDARIES" by
James A. (Jim) Simpson and Jerrold E. (Jerry) Knight at the fabulous Flamingo Laughlin Hotel and Casino on the Colorado River in Laughlin, Nevada.

It was a great week in January 2006.

The audition will have to be on the West Coast for this season, as NBC has canceled the New York version of the series in favor of something entitled "Law & Order: LA".
