I'm hoping for some recommendations for a construction surveying text for newbies. I had the Simplified Site Engineering book when I first started out, and I used the heck out of it. I wonder if there is something newer out there, discussing the equipment and techniques being used today, aimed at beginners. Thanks in advance.

There is always the classic , and excellent, Construction Surveying and Layout - By Crawford.

You might also look at Construction Staking: Step by Step Guide (Surveying Mathematics Made Simple Book 13) - By Jim Crume
If you buy one of the Crume books I strongly recommend that you pay the extra for a hard copy, reading it on a Kindle isn't as easy or useful as having a physical book.

I'll third the Crawford book. Really thorough. Covers everything from equipment adjustments, communication, notes, procedures (multiple methods). Very good book.
